Education and family senator Katharina Günther-Wünsch wants to expand the concept of open family apartments to all of Berlin. The idea behind this is to offer leisure activities for children and young people and advice for their parents and other family members in one and the same place.
“The open family apartments provide direct help, protection for children and support in the neighborhood,” said the CDU politician, who found out about the approach on Friday in Berlin-Spandau. “Especially for difficult residential areas, we will expand the successful concept with funds from the Youth Violence Summit to the entire city in order to protect children and reach families directly and via short distances.”
“There are all kinds of fates here” For some Berlin children, emergency aid is the last resort
In Spandau, a provider with socio-pedagogical specialists enables family counseling and offers for children and young people in polluted residential areas. Parents can, for example, find out about educational issues or social benefits or take part in offers such as sewing and German courses, while there is room for their children for education and leisure time. Access should expressly be low-threshold, the atmosphere as familiar as possible. The project also organizes neighborhood activities and brings families together.
“I hope that with the community initiative further successful measures to prevent child poverty and youth violence in areas with social challenges will be launched,” said tenant protection state secretary Stephan Machulik (SPD).
Experiences should be used in other districts
The experiences gained from the project in the Falkenhagener Feld and Heerstraße Nord quarters in Spandau are to be used in other districts in the future. According to the Senate Family Administration, there should also be more money for this as part of the package of measures that was decided by the Senate after the two “summits against youth violence” in response to the attacks on the police and fire brigade last New Year’s Eve.

Funds of 3.1 million euros are to be made available in 2024 for the expansion of open family apartments in large housing estates and for work with parents of young people who are prepared to use violence. The sponsor of the project is casablanca gGmbH, the state-owned Gewobag makes the open family apartments available rent-free and assumes the operating costs. (dpa)
