Expanding HPV Vaccination to Men: A Step Toward Breaking the Chain of Infections

The measure would contribute to breaking the chain of infections between women and men. This vaccine should not be exclusive to the female population: Gerardo Izquierdo.

Unanimously, the local Congress asked the Ministry of Health and the Health Institute of the State of Mexico (ISEM) to consider in their next vaccination campaign extending the vaccine against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) to men starting at 11 or 12 years of age, according to the point of agreement promoted by deputy Jesús Gerardo Izquierdo Rojas (PRI).
For the legislator, the HPV vaccine is an alternative for the prevention of cervical cancer in women, and other types of cancer in men, while, according to data from the Pan American Health Organization, this virus is responsible for a large proportion of other cancers and genital warts in men and women; It is a very common infection and it is estimated that 90 percent of people will be infected by this virus, which accounts for an extremely high infection rate.
On the other hand, continues the legislator, according to the National Cancer Institute of the United States, vaccination against HPV is recommended at age 11 or 12, although if possible it can be started from the age of 9.
The legislator highlighted that in the entity the vaccination schedules have been exclusive for the female child population, but both men and women are involved in the epidemiological chain of infection, and at the same time they can be asymptomatic carriers, transmitters and also victims of contagion.
He indicated that vaccination against HPV should not be exclusive to the female population, since if it is applied to children it could reduce infections among the adult population of women and men, in addition to recognizing that Mexico City has been a pioneer in this health policy.
