Expanded RN Council proposes Sergio Zarzar as candidate for mayor of Chillán – La Discusión

This afternoon, National Renewal held its fourth regional council of the year, with the purpose of addressing two fundamental objectives: to reflect on the closing of the year in the context of the Constitutional process still in development; and present the party’s mayoral candidates, who aspire to compete in the October 2024 elections.

Rodrigo González, regional president of the community, stressed that this council had an expanded nature, “with the objective of allowing the participation of all militants. “We aspire to generate a unified vision of National Renewal, outlining the position and commitment of the party in the Constituent process and the next elections, considering that next year is an electoral year, with elections for mayor, regional councilors, councilors, among others,” he stated.

González also highlighted the presence in the activity of Andrea Balladares, executive secretary of National Renewal at the national level.

“The objective this time is to make collective decisions and avoid mistakes in crucial elections that precede the Presidential elections. We present the most suitable men and women from this region to represent us in the next elections. Our objective is to make Ñuble a region conducive to living, seeking to recover quality of life indices and stimulate economic growth,” he stated.

Preliminary payroll

Although the proposed names are preliminary, and the party is still in talks with the UDI and Evópoli – thinking that the traditional electoral pact will be maintained -; the community is confident that the people elected will end up on the ballot.

So far, Renovación Nacional intends to compete in 15 of the 21 communes in the region. In six of them, they are mayors who will be up for re-election or are currently in office -San Nicolás, Ránquil, San Fabián, San Ignacio, Ñiquén and Pemuco-, and in one -Coihueco-, the current communal chief, Carlos Chandía passes the baton to another candidate, since he has already exhausted his re-elections.

In Chillán and Coihueco, the expanded council gave its support to the former mayor, Sergio Zarzar, and the current municipal administrator, Russel Cabrera, respectively. Although the party is still in talks with them, everything indicates that they will accept the challenge.

In Zarzar’s case, he has never closed the door on the possibility of returning to the position he held for twelve years. What’s more, he and his close circle have maintained contact with neighborhood associations and community associations. In the opposition, they also see him as the only card that could compete “on equal terms” with the current mayor of the PPD, Camilo Benavente, who will go for his first re-election.

Cabrera, meanwhile, has the unrestricted support of Chandía, who has been his right-hand man during his three terms.

In the rest of the communes, the list is as follows: San Ignacio, Patricio Suazo; El Carmen, Renán Cabezas; Pemuco, Jhonson Guíñez; Yungay, Ingrid Quezada; San Carlos, Carlos Pinochet; San Fabián, Claudio Almuna; Ñiquén, Alex Valenzuela; Saint Nicholas, Victor Hugo Rice; Ránquil, Nicolás Torres; Portezuelo, Adan Zapata; Ninhue, Petrona Ortiz; Bulnes, Gonzalo Bustamante; and Quillón, Esteban Villegas.

In the case of the regional governor election, although there is still no official statement from the party, the names that have been heard are those of the current regional councilor, Javier Ávila (who is today independent); and the former governor of Diguillín and former minister of Economy, Roger Cisterna.
