Exitpolls: Former Social Democratic Prime Minister becomes new President of Croatia NOW

Ex-polls show that Croatian ex-prime minister and social democrat Zoran Milanovic has won the second and final round of the presidential election on Sunday evening. With 53.25 percent of the vote, he leaves his opponent, current center-right president Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, behind him.

Milanovic received 29.5 percent of the vote in the first election and Grabar-Kitarovic received 26.7 percent. The populist folk singer Miroslav Skoro took third place, receiving 24.4 percent of the vote.

Skoro could count on the support of conservative nationalist voters. The expectation was that at the second election round, these people would opt for center-right President Grabar-Kitarovic, which would guarantee them a profit. This reaction did not materialize in the end.

In 2015, Grabar-Kitarovic defeated the then president Ivo Josipovic, a party member of the newly elected president Milanovic. She then became the first female president of the country.

Milanovic starts his term as president in February this year.
