It is clear that giving up your own business or the animal husbandry branch is a difficult step – even if a premium was paid for it. But the study by the University of Kiel also asked whether the subsidized reduction in the number of animals could be a possible alternative for farmers – a way that a third of pig farmers could imagine.
On the one hand, an exit bonus can help farmers who have to abandon animal husbandry not to fall into a financial hole. On the other hand, the funding can also be an incentive to convert stalls for the benefit of animal welfare and thereby reduce the number of animals. Both ways generate costs. A premium would appreciate the added value that farmers create with their move for animal welfare or environmental protection.
