Existing Fossil watches likely won’t get an upgrade to new Wear OS – Tablets and phones – News

I always find it so crazy that you are so dependent on the manufacturer, of such a smartwatch, smartphone, tablet.
Now I know you can throw pretty good custom Rom on most smartphones and tablets, but why are you so dependent on the hardware builder?
On a normal computer/laptop/server it is quite normal to maintain and install an OS yourself, you buy it mainly because of certain hardware, and whether you want Windows or a Linux variant on it, that is up to you. And if your OS has an update, the hardware manufacturer doesn’t have to do anything with it.
Hardware driver updates are also separate from OS updates.
Why is that not possible with a smartwatch, smartphone, … it is often still so closed?

Software is not a thing for a manufacturer like Fossil, and will never be a priority, and ultimately the lifespan is partly determined by the software not being updated anymore, by the manufacturer.
