Exile to Belleville #3: Young Migrants Moved to Shelter in Historic Victory

EXILE TO BELLEVILLE #3. This Thursday, October 19, at dawn, a sheltering of young migrants occupying Belleville Park since June was ordered by the Prefecture (on order of the Ministry of the Interior). Journalist Dario Nadal was there.

Early this morning, nearly 430 young exiles on minority appeals were taken care of by the prefecture to be sheltered in accommodation centers for asylum seekers in Paris and Île-de-France. This shelter is a very small victory in an ocean of hardship for them, but it is the first shelter won by the inter-associate since December 2022, the result of almost a year of battle.

The young people appeared relieved, but there was a lot of panic and stress, because they were afraid not all of them would leave. Other exiles who did not sleep at the park, including young girls and at least one family of Afghan refugees with several young children, were also present in the hope of being sheltered. The organization experienced some problems, particularly because of the buses which were supposed to come to the Belvedere normally, but which ultimately came to pick them up down at the Pali Kao garden. In total, 430 young people left in La Villette, Clichy, Sarcelles, Ris Orangis, and boulevard Ney in the 18th, in centers for asylum seekers. Time for their cases to be examined one by one and whether they are recognized as minors or not.

Those who are recognized as minors will be supported by the ASE. The others will unfortunately probably find themselves on the street and/or picked up by associations which have solidarity hosting networks. Fifty young people were left behind this morning, were taken by the associations (Timmy, Utopia 56, Tara and les midis du Mie) to the Humanitarian Halt which is a place of day accommodation for people exiled in La Chapelle. They are also young people on appeal.

The prefecture would not have sent enough additional buses, delegating the shelter of these 50 remaining young people to the city of Paris. The town hall would have wanted to open a gymnasium on rue Ramponneau, but the State would not have given the green light. These young people therefore remain on the street, with a formal ban on approaching the Belleville district and even less the park which will remain closed for five days, according to the associations. The area is currently cordoned off by law enforcement, and the park cleaned from top to bottom for the next few hours/days. The collections are therefore still relevant and the network of supportive residents is active.

D. is a young Guinean, he had been sleeping in the park since June.
