Exhibitions – New York – New York Museum shows exhibition on German artist Reiss – Kultur

New York (AP) – The German-American artist Winold Reiss (1886-1953) is being honored with a major exhibition in New York. Reiss, who was born in Karlsruhe and emigrated to the USA in 1913, may have been forgotten today, but was a “visionary artist”, according to the New York Historical Society.

“Winold Reiss is the quintessence of a New York artist: an immigrant with a wide creative range and a bold graphic approach, who was influenced by European modernism but found his own style,” said museum director Louise Mirrer. “I have hope that this wonderful exhibition will bring renewed attention to this often-overlooked artist, whose work says so much about our time and his.”

The show “The Art of Winold Reiss: An Immigrant Modernist,” which opened on Friday, is scheduled to show around 150 of the artist’s works at the Central Park Museum in Manhattan until October 9. Reiss painted many portraits, including those of well-known people such as the poet Langston Hughes.
