Exhibition “Spring in Australia” opened at the World Latvian Art Center in Cesis / Article / LSM.lv

Exhibition opened at the World Latvian Art Center (PLMC) in Cesis at the end of September “Spring in AustraliaIt features works by 27 artists, including works by Imants Tillers, Jānis Rūdolfs and Lidija Dombrovskis-Larsone. –

“Autumn started in Latvia and spring started in Australia at the same time, so the word” Australia “is reversed, and here is a comparison of how small Latvia is against Australia, but how many Latvian artists there are in Australia!” “Kultūras rondo” said gallery representative Baiba Eglīte.

Each artist could have their own story. “Those stories are already being told by their works. Here, without even knowing the life story that the artist himself has had, we see the path full of pain, lack, mental oppression that not only America, or those living here, had to go through. That was the time after the war, “said Eglīte.

PLMC director Kārlis Kanderovskis of Latvian Radio “Kultūras rondo” revealed that he has now moved from Chicago to Cēsis and is trying to exhibit works by Australian and Latvian artists in a similar way as galleries in Australia, New York or Toronto would do.
“We do not buy these works. These are all donations, of course, several artists are now in the afterlife, and the works are abroad, just standing. For example, Rolands Kaņeps, who was also exhibited four years or three years ago. All his work stood in his apartment on the 5th floor in Manhattan, New York. And the members of the Latvian Artists’ Union saved them, “says Kanderovskis.

Describing the collaboration of Latvian artists in Australia, Kanderowski finds the story of Imants Tiller interesting. “Imants Tillers did not live in Sydney, he lived at the other end. It would be about as far as Spain from the west coast of Riga, but yes, they do [kopīgas] exhibitions. It’s interesting how its artists’ community in Australia developed. ”

Eglīte also revealed in the program that Australian Latvians have been asked what they love more about Australia or Latvia. “That’s why Edgar Grest has such a painful video where he says you’re called home, but your home is actually here. What is Latvia? Latvia is your father’s home or your ancestors’ home and they call it.”

The exhibition “Spring in Australia” in Cesis was opened on September 26.

The World Latvian Art Center in Cēsis has been operating for seven years. It collects and displays works of art created by Latvians during their emigration.
