Corona, Putin, Ukraine: There is a crisis everywhere. One thing is completely lost – the climate. Just a few years ago, the climate crisis was omnipresent, but in view of ever new global catastrophes, overcoming one of humanity’s greatest crises has taken a back seat.
This is where the exhibition “Shining Prospects” from the aid organization Misereor comes in: In 99 cartoons on topics such as lifestyle, consumption, climate change and justice, 40 cartoonists take a surprisingly different look at the challenges of our time. The climate alliance of the municipalities in the Wesel district is now bringing this exhibition to the region. Hamminkeln is also taking part and wants to bring the climate crisis back into the focus of people’s attention.

“We discuss a lot about the budget or refugee accommodation, but resolutions on climate protection are tolerated,” said Mayor Bernd Romanski, alluding to the most recent environmental committee when, among other things, the pioneering climate protection concept that the city had launched was discussed. It is time to bring the issues of climate and climate protection back into public awareness.
Catrin Siebert, responsible for European affairs at the district, made it clear at the press conference that this was also the approach for the Wesel district to take part in the exhibition: “We have to approach the topic differently and no longer with the finger wagging. We need new ways to enter into discussions with citizens.”

From the point of view of those responsible, an exhibition that illuminates climate, consumption and other catastrophes in a subtle and funny way is well suited for this purpose. Because with humor you can also look at difficult topics from a different perspective and possibly question one or another behavior. The laughter often gets stuck in the viewer’s throat – and that’s exactly what it’s supposed to do.
For example, when a lone fisherman on the high seas fishes an oil canister out of the sea – “fisherman’s end”. A cartoonist also takes parents’ taxis to school. That the child walks to school? Unthinkable with this traffic! Or the cruise ship making its way through a sea of plastic bags, to which one onlooker commented: “I would only allow blue plastic bags!”

It starts in Hamminkeln on November 11th – not a randomly chosen date for a caricature exhibition. Around 25 works will be on display in the town hall, at the comprehensive school, in the city library and at Ringenberg Castle – accompanied by two additional events.
On Tuesday, November 12th, Akke Wilmes, energy consultant at the NRW consumer advice center, will tell anecdotes from his everyday consulting work (7 p.m., city library, free entry). And on Saturday, November 23rd, Markus Persing will introduce the “basic technique of visualization” (2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Ringenberg Castle, free entry). The Hamminkeln comprehensive school will also take up the topic, announced its principal Anette Schmücker: For example, the students will deal with the caricatures in geography and art lessons and create corresponding works of art themselves in a workshop.
