Roman Korovin’s first work in the new exhibition was made in 2020, after he had seen an exhibition of symbolists at the National Museum of Art. Before that, due to the pandemic, there had been a silence in art life for a long time, and therefore this exhibition appealed to him especially strongly, and he also made a painting in which lightness and something from an impressionistic mood was characteristic of him. It was in this atmosphere that the next works took place, as opposed to all the depressing feelings associated with the pandemic at the time.
“Just after winter and covida, he wanted something light, popy – o, fields, a house, flowers, a grass, everyone is sunbathing – Not one – where we have problems, and re – where we have all the problems on the walls,” says an artist. “I wanted such a light, airy one. This show is about sunlight.
Until then, I didn’t want to touch that impressionism, but there is something impressionistic here – the sun, the spring, the flowers, everything is filled with air. “
However, Roman Korovin’s characteristic expression is also very recognizable in the exhibition. Again, he organizes his paintings in diptychs or pairs of paintings, or in other groups of three or four paintings. The two paintings of the couple are almost or identical, with only minor changes in some details. Thus he highlights the rhythm of life and the cyclical repetition of everything in nature and in human life.

Again, the plot is not important in his works, he depicts very ordinary things and situations, because the plot would only disturb the main thing – and these are the games of light, color, composition, perspective. Thus, his painting becomes something related to poetry or music: “It is not a story about literature, but about plasticity, colors, forms, contrasts, relationships between objects, composition.
That is why painting is necessary, that it is not literature, it is something else, closer to poetry, music. For fine things, not words. “
If the bright, white hall of the gallery “Art XO” is filled with works of spring mood, then further in the Dome Hall there is a completely different atmosphere, creating a contrasting interplay. Roman Korovin explains: “There’s something so dramatic, something ‘heavy’, a whole different range of colors. Because each part of the exhibition reinforces each other, it creates a contrast. It’s a world without the sun.”

Romans Korovins has been nominated for the Purvītis Award several times, receiving the Latvian Award for Photography for two years in a row. His works are in the collection of the Latvian National Museum of Art, as well as in private collections in Europe and the USA.
Roman Korovin works in a wide variety of genres and is always characterized by precise observation, visual paradoxes and humor, but, as Ilza Žeivate, the director of the Art XO gallery, admits, it is in painting that he shines with special sensitivity and philosophical reflection: “When he first showed these upcoming exhibitions works, he said – I had just come home from an exhibition of symbolism, and I wanted to paint it in the air in the sun! He was very inspired by that exhibition. wrote, “I have more and more. And he went into that landscape. And maybe this time it’s more what Romans calls poetry, it’s painting poetry. a sad note echoes in the Dome Hall, there is not much sun.
And I think that the painter whose main task is to paint and depict light and shadow like Roman does not tell stories about black when he paints war, but that his experience appears in color. “
Roman Korovin’s new solo exhibition, “2020. 2021”, will open on Thursday, March 17, and will be on view at Art XO until April 9.
