Exhibition on Campeche installed at the Berlin Institute

To disseminate and display the photographic collection of the explorer Teobert Maler (1842-1917), the exhibition is presented In the footsteps of Teobert Maler. Archaeological projects in Campeche, Mexico, composed of 20 panels with images and information about the results of the studies carried out in the Santa Rosa Xtampak and Dzehkabtún archaeological site and area, in Campeche.

In a statement, the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) reported that the exhibition opened on October 15, 2024 at the Ibero-American Institute of Berlin (IAI, by its acronym in German), with the presence of the Mexican ambassador to Germany, Francisco José Quiroga Fernández, and authorities of the European institute. And it will remain until December 9.

The objective is for the German public to learn about the cooperation that exists between the two nations in matters of archaeology, in both archaeological sites of the Classic Mayan period (250-900 AD), and to disseminate the photographic collection of the Austrian explorer who, at the end of the century XIX and early XX, he traveled through part of the Mexican territory and documented, for the first time, both places, through photographs and drawings.

The exhibition has old and contemporary photographs that allow us to compare the state of conservation that the buildings were in a hundred years ago and what they have today, which represents valuable testimony for research, while at the same time giving an account of the versatility and challenges of the field work.

The curatorship was carried out by the German archaeologist, attached to the IAI, Iken Paap, who, together with the specialist from the INAH Campeche Center, Antonio Benavides Castillo, directs the investigations at both Mexican sites.
