One of the most important characters in Anita Paegle’s work is a cat. But a cat is a creature that walks where it likes, that’s why the Riga Art Nouveau Center museum will have cats from various book illustrations, stamps and coins created by the artist. “I am interested in simply drawing what is around – flowers, birds, animals, objects, also architecture that I like. And you know, things that have made it into books change – it’s no longer just a chair you’ve drawn, it has its own character, soul”, says Anita Paegle.
At the exhibition Riga cats Anita Paegle’s original illustrations for Inese Zandere’s book of poems will be on display Cat on the piano (2021), for the book by Mara Cielena Meow and purr (2005), everything will be complemented by drawings for thematic stamps issued by Latvijas Pastas and a coin issued by the Bank of Latvia Fairy Coin I. Five cats.
Working in children’s book graphics since 1981, Anita Paegle has developed her own style – each illustration she makes is like a separate work of art, where details, nuances and characters are of great importance. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to enjoy the cats captured by the artist in Riga’s urban environment and try to recognize the streets and houses of Riga seen in the drawings.
