Exhibition: In the Heat of Coal – Exploring the Legacy of Mining Basins

Cloister Abierto Capuchinos, within its program dedicated to plastic arts, resumes its activity in autumn with the exhibition In the heat of coal, by Conchi Casado Sulé. The inauguration will be tomorrow, Friday, September 8 at 6:30 p.m. The duration of the exhibition will last until October 15 and the hours of this new initiative coordinated by Raquel Lanza are: Monday to Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Conchi Casado, PhD in mining engineering from the University of Oviedo, defines herself as a “miner and coal miner for having lived and worked as an engineer in various mining areas in Spain and abroad. She has also been a professor at the University of León and I collaborate in research with other Spanish universities, I direct doctoral theses and I am part of evaluation panels for them », she affirms.

For this reason, this exhibition is justified not only from the creative aspect but also from the vital one. Regarding the former, Casado indicates that «I have always liked art, and I have been painting since I was a child. I fondly remember the first painting I sold at the age of 12. It was commissioned by a schoolmate, that she chose a reason as her mother’s day gift. I combined my studies with music (I finished my piano degree during my university period) and also with painting. Both activities were fun for me. Restless to learn and experiment, I took the opportunity to train as a jeweler, this being another of the activities that I develop with interest », she says.

Regarding Al calor del carbon, Conchi Casado reports that “in this exhibition I intend to value, in an artistic and informative way, what coal has represented in our lives during the last two centuries.”

the thrust of the basins

«With these images I want to outline the boost that our mining basins have given to society over time, because coal, in addition to being the main energy source in the industrial revolution, was a crucial element of development, progress and comfort to this day,” he remarks.
