Exhibition dedicated to the centenary of Olgerts Kroders at the National Library of Latvia – Stage – Culture +

Through the book, the exhibition will reflect the director’s era, his contemporaries, informative and emotional impressions. It will feature exhibits from the Kroders Library, the personal archives of Krišjānis Salmiņš and Evita Sniedze. The author of the idea is the actor of Valmiera Theater Krišjānis Salmiņš, the visual solution was created by the artist Anna Heinrihsone.

“Suddenly on one nice day, the whole library that I have all my life … I have actually collected and accumulated … It is a huge library. I give it back to Valmiera Theater – everything, vsjo and through! I went to live here in this room. Where makes sense? None. ”

In 2002, moving to Valmiera, Olgerts Kroders arrived with his entire extremely large library, which includes about 10,640 items, excluding periodicals. The exhibition is like a deductive attempt to understand, to guess the meaning of the book in Kroder’s life, in relations with others, in their opinion about him.

For those interested, it will be on view from August 10 to October 9 in the atrium of the 1st floor of the National Library of Latvia.

Olgerts Kroders (09.08.1921 in Riga – 10.10.2012 in Valmiera) was born into the family of actress Herta Wolf and theater critic, translator Robert Kroder. The intellectual traditions of the family, his persistent work and wide cultural interests have made Kroder one of the most erudite personalities in the art of Latvian theater. He has worked in almost all Latvian theaters, staging 136 performances, and has been a film and theater actor. He was deported to the High North (1941–1956). Olgerts Kroder’s spirit aristocracy and inner independence have allowed him to turn to mental and physical violence, cliché aesthetic canons, both in art and in life, emphasizing in his productions the importance of spiritual activity, responsibility and inner freedom as a thinking being. Probably that is why he has staged William Shakespeare’s tragedy “Hamlet” four times in his life in three different theaters. The director is buried in Valmiera, Dīvala cemetery.
