Laimdots Mūrnieks (1922-2011) was born on May 23 in Vestiena Parish, Madona District, into a peasant family. Studied in Cesis and
Jelgava Teachers’ Institute (1938–44), graduated from the Painting Department of the Latvian State Academy of Arts in 1953 with a diploma thesis Winged helperthe head of Vladimir Kozin.
Worked as a teacher in Valmiera and Priekuli secondary schools and agricultural technical school (1944–46), combined Art as an artist-designer (1953-82). Member of the Artists’ Union since 1957. During the Soviet era, Laimdots Mūrnieks was socially active and held positions both in the Artists’ Union and in various other public organizations. He has been honored several times with high awards. Participated in the organization of Art Days, was the head of the LMS Painting Studio.
Laimdots Mūrnieks has been participating in exhibitions since 1953. There have been solo exhibitions in Riga, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Tokyo – together with M. Chagall, Kobe, Osaka, Kyoto, as well as in the USA, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, etc. Several solo exhibitions and joint exhibitions have been in the Classical Art Gallery Antonija.
The artist has painted in his special and unique style of Laimdota Mūrnieks, both in monumental and standing painting, painting stylized landscapes, still lifes and portraits. Used for work – oil paints, pastels and tempera. The color scheme is pasty, the compositions are laconic, there is a tendency to harmonize color and shape. He stays true to this style all his life.
