The gallery in the studio building E71 shines and shines and does this calmly and in the greatest calm. Since Friday, c/o artist Lothar Zeuch has been presenting works from the past three years under the exhibition title “Quellen”.
There is the picture “The Power of color and light”. On an 80 by 80 centimeter canvas, a spiral of countless small squares in the colors of the rainbow revolves around a small but very present center: a white circle. Lothar Zeuch meticulously draws the small boxes with acrylic paints, which combine to form the imposing symbol of the spiral. The viewer can hardly escape the spiral of light and color, as he is almost sucked in by it. The spiral embodies movement, power and energy. And the search for the way to the inside, to the essence of things.

In his paintings and drawings, Lothar Zeuch deals with repetitive mathematical structures and geometric patterns. The “steps” consist of a large number of small squares in three shades of red, which become progressively lighter over three steps from the outside inwards. In contrast to the dynamic spiral shape, the square appears static. And yet the lightening in the middle creates a similar effect: the viewer is drawn into the center of the picture, into its core.

Pencil drawings are also shown among the 20 works in the gallery in studio building E71. Without color tones, only with the gray of the pencil in all its shades, Zeuch succeeds in developing a gradation from the dark in the center to the light edges with the drawn small squares, similar to the painted “steps”. There is something else in this drawing: Zeuch works with the illusion of three-dimensionality. Each square acts like a small pyramid. “Insanely exhausting” Zeuch laughingly describes his way of working.

And then there are the “Birches”: Zeuch only captured sections of the trunks on the canvas, they appear almost abstract. “I worked once on a dark background, once on a light background. The differences are minimal, but recognizable,” explains Zeuch. From the very beginning of his artistic career, he seems to have attempted to get inside things and ideas. It began with photo-realistic images of stones, wood, fruit – nature, as you can see from the “birch trees” in the E71, fascinates him to this day.

The artist, born in Viersen in 1952, studied object design in Krefeld. He has been working as a freelance painter for over 40 years.
