A study published in the journal Science carried out on people infected by coronavirus who have passed the Covid-19 in a serious way reveals that these patients show an immune response stronger against possible re-exposures to SARS-CoV-2 than those who had the disease in a milder way.
As collected Medical Writing, the scientists, led by Christian H. Ottensmeier, of the La Jolla Institute for Immunology (California, USA) they sequenced the RNA of CD8 T cells, one of the defenses against the virus.
The researchers sampled 39 Covid-19 patients with varying levels of severity and samples from 10 other healthy subjects. Later, they compared the characteristics of the lymphocytes generated with the coronavirus against those of syncytial viruses and influenza.
The experts found that the CD8 T cells of individuals who had passed Covid-19 in mild forms they were more ‘tired’ and deteriorated than those of those who had suffered it seriously.
“The findings suggest that patients with severe disease mount a more effective CD8 T-cell response, which may lead to increased protection against re-exposure to the virus“, say the researchers in their conclusions.
Either way, the scientists caution that it is not yet known whether these cells play a role in the pathogenesis of the disease, or whether the immunity they generate is longer term than that of her peers.
The results of this new research on the ability of CD8 T cells against coronavirus give light on this barrier of the immune system, which seems to play a relevant role in containing SARS-CoV-2. Despite this, as collected Medical Writing, There are still many questions, despite the fact that new research is being developed to learn more about the characteristics of lymphocytes and their role in the evolution and prognosis of Covid-19.
