Lead study author Dr. Michael Noetel emphasizes the impact of depression on wellbeing, stating that it hurts more than debt, divorce, or diabetes. However, despite its prevalence and detrimental effects, only half of those with depression receive any treatment.

The findings of this study align with previous research on the benefits of exercise for mental health. Dr. Adam Chekroud, who conducted a study in 2018 involving over 1.2 million Americans, found that those who exercised reported better well-being and mental health. Both studies provide evidence that exercise should be considered as a viable treatment option for depression, alongside therapy and medication.

The study also revealed that any form of exercise is better than none. While more exercise and higher intensity workouts were found to be more effective, starting with small steps and gradually increasing the intensity can still have a positive impact. Dr. Noetel suggests that having a clear exercise program that pushes individuals even just a little can yield significant benefits.

Motivation is often a challenge when it comes to exercise, especially for individuals dealing with depression. Setting goals and tracking activity did not prove to be helpful in the studies analyzed by Dr. Noetel. Instead, he recommends seeking support and accountability from fitness groups, trainers, or loved ones. Taking small steps towards getting that support increases the likelihood of sticking to an exercise routine.

Furthermore, making exercise enjoyable is crucial for long-term adherence. Dr. Noetel advises individuals to make exercise as easy and attractive as possible, such as listening to audiobooks or trying out a yoga studio. Enjoying the workout increases confidence and helps overcome obstacles, ultimately leading to a higher likelihood of maintaining a regular exercise regimen.
