Exercise and Air Pollution: Health Risks and Precautions

Amid high levels of air pollution throughout the world, researchers warn against exercising outside when pollution levels are high in the air, especially for patients with asthma, diabetes and those with chronic diseases.

The researchers recommend athletes to avoid exercising at night when the concentration of pollutant particles is high.

Pulmonologists say that normally a lot of pollutants can be filtered out through the nose.

But when we exercise vigorously, then we breathe through the mouth to allow enough air in, and we end up taking in large amounts of pollutants.

But does this mean that we should stop exercising outside? The answer depends on your age, health status, level of air pollution, and even the time you exercise.

Doctors recommend that people with asthma, diabetes, chronic heart or lung conditions, or respiratory conditions avoid exercising in polluted air.

Experts advise avoiding exercise also before dawn or late at night, as at these times the concentrations of pollutant particles are higher as the smoke settles near the ground.

Anyway, there’s a website called Airnow.gov that tells us about pollution levels in every city and country around the clock.

Public health expert Dr. Jazla Fadda says:

World Health Organization figures warn that 99 percent of the world’s population does not breathe clean air completely.

– 7 million people in the world die each year due to health disorders caused by polluted air.

– There is a sensor launched in the United States to help people measure polluting elements in the air, primarily ozone caused by the interaction of nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons, in addition to other harmful elements.

– This element would have a significant negative impact on health, especially the young and the elderly.
