Execution of Ukrainian Soldiers by Russian Forces: War Crime Evidence from 82nd Separate Air Assault Brigade

The three military men, whose execution video recently appeared online, were soldiers of the 82nd separate air assault brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Literally: “This footage is further evidence of a war crime committed by members of the armed forces of the Russian Federation.

Unidentified persons from among the military personnel of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation or other military formations of the aggressor state, acting intentionally, in violation of the laws and customs of war, while being on the line of combat contact in one of the regions of the Zaporozhye region, in violation of Art. 3 of the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War of 08/12/1949, as well as other norms of international humanitarian law, deliberately killed people protected in conditions of armed conflict.

Namely, 3 servicemen of the 82nd separate air assault brigade of the Airborne Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, who were out of action as a result of being captured (hors de combat) after receiving wounds and concussions of varying severity.”

Details: The paratroopers note that this criminal offense is included in the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations, and the case materials will be transferred to the International Criminal Court.

The dead soldiers were evacuated from the battlefield.

Background:

• On December 27, the prosecutor’s office began an investigation into the shooting of Ukrainian prisoners of war near Zaporozhye by the enemy.
• According to the investigation, servicemen of the Russian Army in December 2023, during a military clash with the Ukrainian Defense Forces near the village of Robotino, Zaporozhye region, captured three Ukrainian defenders. An hour later, in violation of Art. 3 of the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, the occupiers shot them.
