The operation to eliminate the top military leadership of Ukraine was carried out by the group of General of the Russian GRU Andrei Averyanov, assures Hristo Grozev.
Even before the start of the war, the Russian Federation sent several elite groups into Ukraine, which, during the invasion, were supposed to capture the government quarter of Kyiv and the top leadership of Ukraine, including President Vladimir Zelensky.
The head of the influential investigative journalist group Bellingcat, Hristo Grozev, spoke about this in an interview with Mikhail Zygar on YouTube.
“A couple of weeks before the start of the war, they went through Belarus to be close to Kiev. Some of them entered Kiev and were preparing to take the political quarter, people subordinate to Averyanov… There were about 30 of them (people – ed.), this is a very elite group… They sent there the same people who blew up warehouses in the Czech Republic and Bulgaria, who poisoned both the Bulgarian businessman Gebrev and the Skripals“- said Grozev.
He clarified that at the beginning of the war, these Russian killers were very inspired. They were confident that they could easily carry out the “most beautiful” and victorious part of the war: they would capture or kill the leadership of Ukraine. However, the plans of the GRU officers were thwarted and their mood changed radically.
“We monitored the communications of several members of this team. It was both scary and funny: scary because they saw what their goals were, and funny because every day they became less and less jingoistic and began to criticize the leadership for a poorly planned operation. At first they wrote to their wives that they would stay for a week, then for two weeks, and then for a month, six months… They began to doubt the fidelity of their wives. You can write a novel about this, how the team that was supposed to ensure victory for Russia in a week became psychological victims of their own war“- said Grozev.
According to him, part of this group was liquidated during the war, and part managed to escape to the rear.
“They are from Russia planning sabotage operations, managing sabotage raids into Ukraine from Belarus. They no longer have such big goals as before: to kill Zelensky. They completely failed in this regard“, stated the head of Bellingcat.
Earlier, Grozev explained why Prigozhin stopped his march on Moscow.
