Exclusive interview: Zelensky speaks out on TCC, war’s end, and international support

President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky gave an interview to the German television channel ARD.

President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky made a number of loud statements that not a single Ukrainian will pass by. Here we talk about the actions of the TCC, and about the fate of men who went abroad, and about Trump’s statements, and even about family events.

When, finally, and under what conditions will the war end? Can Ukraine continue to count on support from the United States and Europe? Journalist Victoria Gnatyuk spoke about this in an exclusive story for TSN.ua.

Zelensky about TCC

The most scandalous topic in society now is mobilization. The Verkhovna Rada and the Cabinet of Ministers still cannot agree on what the new bill should be. The first document has already been returned to the initiator for revision; no one has yet seen the new edition.

However, there is a shortage of personnel at the front, so mobilization continues according to the old rules, while at the same time a lot of scandals with the TCC are surfacing on the Internet. Mobilization methods are sometimes difficult to understand, pulling people out of buses and hijacking them in the middle of the street. Zelensky has not kept silent either. In an interview with German television ARD, he explained how he felt about this.

“Yes, these are the cases. It is very wrong when representatives of the military registration and enlistment offices walked the streets and looked for guys who did not come to the military registration and enlistment offices. But here I would like us to be fair and honest. This is completely wrong, they shouldn’t do this.

What does the president require?

In addition, Zelensky said that he had already asked the military and deputies in the new bill on mobilization in Ukraine to do so “so that there is no chance of walking the streets.”

“Today there are opportunities to use the digital format; we live in a time of digitalization. Moreover, we established this process both during a pandemic and during a war. Therefore, there is no problem in solving this issue in a modern way.”

And he noted what else should be taken into account in the mobilization bill and imprinted in the minds of Ukrainians.

“Demobilization is important in mobilization, many have fought, many days, there are people who have been on the battlefield for 700 days. I am grateful to them for protecting the state, like every Ukrainian. But gratitude from society is not enough, I think, and we need fair rotations, we need to give wide vacations, money cannot cover everything, we need justice in this direction.”

What will happen to men who went abroad illegally?

By the way, the Ministry of Defense has taken up inspections of regional terrestrial centers. On January 28, on his Facebook, the minister Rustem Umerov said, that unscheduled inspections of the TCC have begun and many violations have already been identified, however, he has not yet clarified what exactly they are talking about. And while there is a showdown with the recruitment centers, Zelensky does not give up hopes of returning to Ukraine the men who illegally left abroad. He calls this a question of justice, because we are not even talking about sending to the front, but about the internal economy.

“This is a matter of fairness. These people must pay taxes. There are people who left and did not return to work. And that’s their right. But if they are citizens of Ukraine, then they must pay taxes, preferably to Ukraine. Because we give this money to our soldiers who defend Ukraine.”

Will Germany help refugee men?

The TV channel journalist noted that there is an ongoing discussion in Germany as to whether the government there should reduce social assistance to men of military age in order to use the saved funds to support Ukraine. After all, in Germany alone there are at least 200 thousand such men. In response, Zelensky noted that such a decision should be made by the German government.

“There are people who left for various reasons and had legislative reasons and legislative opportunities to leave. They saved children and went to different countries of the world. Who left, who stayed here and it was the choice of each person. And today who returned, and we are grateful to those who returned to build Ukraine, and not just to fight. There are a lot of people working in Ukraine, we are talking to you right now and it feels like the question is only about those people who are at the front, of course, this is the number 1 question. But there are 880 thousand of us, we have a million-strong army, and 30 million are currently working, and maybe even more. There are people who had legal reasons to leave, people of non-mobilization age, and there are students. The decision to support people is your personal decision, that of your state. We would like the mobilization people who left outside the law of Ukraine to be in Ukraine.”

Under what conditions will the men be returned to Ukraine?

At the same time, Zelensky noted that they are not going to drag men from abroad back to Ukraine by force, because for this at least an appropriate law is needed.

“I’m definitely not shouting: “Olaf Scholz, bring them back.” Olaf Scholz cannot take someone and come with him or push him. We are defending values. If we say that we are defending democracy, values and freedom, then We must act legally against violators, as in a civilized country.”

Zelensky on international support and allies’ dependence on Ukraine

In the interview, Zelensky also admitted that Ukraine is very dependent on the support of its allies. But the allies are also dependent on Ukraine. Because if Putin wins, in particular the Taurus, which Germany has been delaying for so long, will no longer be helped. By the way, the other day German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius actually made the following statement, saying that if Russia wins the war with Ukraine, the Germans themselves will need Taurus.

They are unlikely to help you then. This is a different war, these are different people, Russia is completely different. That is, the question here is not about weapons, and the question is not about the Chancellor’s position, Germany’s position or the Bundestag, or Minister Pistorius. Either you believe that Ukraine is right and Russia needs to be put in its place, and then you, one two three four, five steps that you yourself think need to be given and strengthened Ukraine. That is, you either believe or you don’t believe. I just want to say that there is a great cost to not believing.”

What about US support?

The issue of support from the United States is no less painful for Ukraine. Recently, relations have been improved. According to the head of state, “over the last month Ukraine has had good dynamics in defense packages” and now Ukraine is waiting for a new decision from the United States.

Zelensky once again noted that the most powerful support for Ukraine is provided by the United States and he does not believe that even if Trump wins the election, this will change, jokingly adding that perhaps he simply does not want to believe in it and hopes that all decisions are still made in the United States do not depend on the position of one person. At the same time, Zelensky made another no less loud statement: if this powerful support for Ukraine from the United States breaks down, this is fraught with a redistribution of the world.

“First of all, I believe that this will not happen – that Europe itself will not remain. And this question is complex. Europe itself will not be able to cope at the level that Ukraine received before, either in weapons or financially. If this happens and in the United States there are, God forbid, some processes to delay support, this will affect a united Europe. And there are consequential problems here. The first is the shortage of weapons and finances in Ukraine. Secondly, I think that the alliance between the United States and Europe will be lost. Third, Europe itself will understand that this is a signal: if Ukraine does not hold out and Putin goes forward, this is a signal from the United States that Europe will remain alone among the NATO countries who will oppose Russia. This will be a serious threat. Putin will take advantage of this 100%. Therefore, I believe this will be a division of the world, that’s what it’s called.”

Meeting with Trump?

Zelensky also noted that he is ready to meet with Trump and explain to him everything about the war in Ukraine in 24 hours, in response to Trump’s statement that he is able to end the war in a day.

“Well, I’ll talk to him. And I will tell you honestly: if its format or its formula leads to peace, and 24 hours is really enough for it, then I will be a very happy president. Very happy. Because I know how many people we lose per day. I know how much it costs. Therefore, I will be happy if someone shows me how to end the war in 24 hours. Who knows.

When will the war end?

And of course we talked about the duration of the war. To the journalist’s question “what gives you hope that the war will end this year,” Zelensky answered the following:

“You need to believe in yourself, believe in the people, in Ukraine, in your partners and in the world. Because every war ends. I think we are in a very difficult moment. It is possible to stop Russia both geopolitically and financially. Yet they can be stopped with this war. Prevent the destruction of Ukraine, prevent the destruction of our nation, prevent global migration, prevent a third world war. Well, it seems so to me.

Zelensky about personal

But Zelensky also spoke about personal things. The President of Ukraine noted that on January 21, his son Kirill celebrated his 11th birthday and, despite his young age, the guy already understands what the European Union and NATO are, that children believe in Ukraine and people, they study on an equal basis with others in Ukraine. The journalist asked if they were proud of their dad, Zelensky replied with a smile that he had not asked them about this, but he really wanted to believe.
