Exclusive Interview with Millie Bobby Brown on New Film ‘Damsel’ and More!

By Félix Caraballo MartínezMarch 14, 2024 at 03:00 hrs.

For the past eight years, we have witnessed the growth of the young actress Millie Bobby Brown, in the already iconic series that has left its mark on the history of popular culture, Stranger Things, in the Enola Holmes films, also from the giant of the streaming Netflix, and in Godzilla vs Kong. In Damsel, the new fantasy proposal, now available on the platform, Brown plays a young damsel who agrees to marry a prince, only to discover that the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to pay an ancient debt to a dangerous dragon.

The 20-year-old actress, who recently announced her engagement to the son of rocker Jon Bon Jovi, has managed to diversify her career, becoming a successful business woman. In addition to being a fashion icon, and having her own line of beauty products, she serves as executive producer of her new film and last year she released a drama and fantasy novel. While we wait for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, the actress, who shares roles with Robin Wright (Forrest Gump) and Angela Bassett (Black Panther), sat down exclusively with Metro to talk about the physical demands of this new role and the various roles of women in the film.

5 questions for Millie:

Something that really caught my attention about this movie was how it went from a sort of Disney-esque fairy tale, to a dark survival story, very Brothers Grimm. As a producer, what was it like working with this shift in tone in the first act, towards darker, more somber textures?

Recommended

-Yes absolutely. There’s a feeling that you have to build trust in your director, because he’s never done anything like this. There’s a lot of story to tell in an hour and 45 minutes, but Juan Carlos (director) just knew his vision and knew how we wanted to make it a reality.

The film presents empowered women, in control, from different perspectives. From the dragon, the queen and even your character. So what was it like working on this? What resonated most with you, the character, the story, or the messages the story presents?

—Yes, I think that is a very important topic, right? This woman feels like she is in control. But I also think she’s not in control. There’s a good story to tell there. It’s probably about a lot of women’s experiences and a lot of people’s experiences, but I do think there’s definitely a lack of control during the first part of the movie. Then when she starts to realize what she is capable of and that she can trust herself, that’s when she starts to take that control back.

At times it reminded me of some elements of Game of Thrones and even Sean Connery’s 1996 Dragonheart. Was there any visual inspiration from other projects?

—It all comes down to trusting Juan Carlos… he knew his vision. He knew the tone and what he wanted to look at. Yes, you are correct, it definitely has fragments and elements from different projects but it is also very original. He had never seen anything like this before.

On the treadmill you have to run, climb, ride a horse, fight, etc. The physical aspect is very present. How different was the physical preparation for this film from Enola, or perhaps Stranger Things?

—It was really a challenge, it definitely challenged me. I’ve never really tried so hard. I’m not someone who likes to exercise. I try, but I get too bored. So it really challenged me. It was really exhausting. My body received a lot of physical therapy, acupuncture and ultrasounds (laughs). In fact, I remember walking around with pain in my shoulder one day and thinking I would have to go through the entire shoot with only one shoulder functioning. The body was really taking its toll.

If the studio lets you say anything about the filming of Stranger Things, any scoop that you might not have said before about filming?

—Well, we are currently filming and we are very excited. Maybe I haven’t said this before.
