She managed to keep it a secret for a long time. Before what was supposed to be her championship, Karlsson was involved in an incident where she was properly overtaken.
Five days before the last World Cup race before the WC in Planica, Karlsson crashed his car. The crash, which took place in Östersund, ended without serious injuries – however, both cars had to be scrapped. We haven’t really been told more than that.
Until now.
In an interview with Expressen says Karlsson that she was lucky to get away easily. Furthermore, she says that she had problems with her neck for a long time after the accident – mentally it lasted longer than that.
– You were quite shocked for a long time after that. It’s high on the list of the scariest things I’ve been through. And long afterwards I was… hysterical and easily frightened, she says.
Sentenced to a fine
While she processed the accident, the next step came, also before the WC had started. During the pre-camp, her phone started ringing. Karlsson ignored the calls – but then received a text message from the police.
“You must answer now! This is a police interrogation”.
– And I just like: “Huh!?” I’m in pre-camp before the WC, struggling every day with trying to keep the stress level down – and then it happens, she says.
In the middle of a training session, she therefore kindly cooperated.
– I just wanted to end that conversation. But the police wanted me to describe how everything happened, really all the details. So I said that “I was going to practice, was stressed and wasn’t paying attention” – and took all the responsibility. Fine me like. I just wanted to hang up.
Karlsson was finally sentenced to a fine, she says that since the accident she has never driven that way to the training facility.
The WC ended with her winning two silvers and two bronzes.
