Exclusive Hands-On Impressions of the Vivo X100 Pro: Design, Display, Performance, Cameras, and Price

Today the Chinese company Vivo introduced its new flagship Vivo X100 Pro
The main novelties include the super-powerful Dimensity 9300 and a trio of 50 Mpx cameras
We went straight to Beijing to test the Vivo X100 Pro firsthand

Vivo held a grand event in China today to launch its current flagship X100 series. It currently consists of two models: the basic X100 and the improved X100 Pro, while the latter will be available in the Czech Republic in the future. Our editors were able to attend the official launch in Beijing, so we bring you exclusive first impressions of the Vivo X100 Pro before it hits stores.

Moon and Sun design

For the design of the Vivo X100 Pro, the manufacturer is said to have been inspired by our largest cosmic bodies: the Moon and the Sun. The inspiration is mainly evident in the massive photo module on the back, which with its metal frame is supposed to resemble either a sunset or the shape of the moon.

The choice of color combinations also carries this inspiration: black, white, orange and light blue. Unfortunately, it is currently not clear what color combinations will be available on the Czech market. There is talk of a black variant and one more of the ones offered.

As for the processing itself, all variants are made of aircraft-grade aluminum, and the back material is either glass (glossy white, matte blue and black) or vegan leather in the case of orange. The dimensions of the smartphone remained the same as last year’s X90 Pro model. It is therefore still pleasant to the touch, even if the weight is simply noticeable and due to the massive photo module in the hand it falls slightly backwards. The construction, itself quite strong, still has IP68 protection certification, so it can withstand dust and water up to 1.5 meters.

Large and bright display

The manufacturer used the same diagonal as last year for the X90 Pro, i.e. 6.78″. The screen is punch-holed at the top and there’s just a tiny chin at the bottom. The luminosity pushed up to 3,000 nits is especially worthy of praise. Otherwise, we are talking about an LTPO AMOLED panel from BOE with a dynamic refresh rate and a resolution of 1,260 × 2,800 pixels (453 ppi, aspect ratio 20:9).

Apart from luminosity, Vivo hasn’t made much progress with the display. It is still true that it is slightly curved (so-called 2.5D) and contains, in addition to the already mentioned, an optical fingerprint reader, again the same as the X90 Pro. Unfortunately, the state-of-the-art ultrasonic fingerprint scanner is not available. Perhaps for the X100 Pro+ model, which is only discussed so far, but has not been officially presented.

Performance is controlled by Dimensity

Also this year, Vivo benefits from cooperation with MediaTek. As the very first smartphone on the market, the X100 comes with the new octa-core Dimensity 9300 chipset. We will focus on real performance only in the review itself, but it is already no secret that the new Dimensity scored a score exceeding 2,000,000 points in the AnTuTu benchmark.

It supports fast 100W charging with a cable, but more demanding users who like to charge wirelessly have not been forgotten. You can reach a power of up to 50 W on the licensed charger. Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, a stereo speaker and a USB-C port for charging are worth mentioning.

Camera: triple 50 Mpx

Vivo has long focused on mobile photography with its flagship models. This is also evident in this year’s X100 Pro superphone. It has a triple assembly of photo sensors in the large rear module: main, wide-angle and telephoto lens with focus on optical zoom.

It probably won’t surprise anyone that the main camera with a resolution of 50 Mpx has optical image stabilization and laser autofocus. Again we have a large 1″ sensor, this time the Sony IMX920. The phone can also switch between multiple focal lengths (24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm and 100mm), as Apple showed with the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Vivo X100 has three cameras, each with a resolution of 50 megapixels

There are also improvements from the German icon Zeiss, which has already collaborated with Vive on the last few generations of flagship models. An important element is also the V3 chip, which solves the calculations and functions of the camera connected to artificial intelligence.

The rest of the photo equipment is a 50 Mpx telephoto lens with up to 4x optical zoom, 10x hybrid and up to 100x digital zoom. This secondary camera is also equipped with optical stabilization and is great for portraits at a greater distance. Through the rear cameras, video can be recorded in maximum 4K resolution at 60 fps.

The trio is rounded off by a 50MP wide-angle camera with a 119° angle of view and support for macro photography. As for the selfie camera, Vivo used a proven solution from last year, i.e. a 32MP front camera with 4K video support. There is also a special Cinematic mode for video recording working with depth of field.

Price and availability

The Vivo X100 series has been launched so far only in China, where it will go on sale soon. The basic 12/256 GB variant will go on sale for 4,999 yuan (less than 20,000 crowns including VAT). Only the X100 Pro model will reach Europe. It will also be offered in the Czech Republic in the coming months, but the official price and exact availability are not clear. According to domestic representatives of the manufacturer, it is still early for the arrival, but we could learn new information before the end of the year.
