Spectators of the Tribecca Film Festival taking place in New York will have the chance on June 17 to discover in a world exclusive a documentary entirely devoted to Hideo Kojimathe mastermind behind the Metal Gear Solid saga and more recently Death Stranding. The festival created in 2001 by Robert De Niro et Jane Rosenthal quickly became a popular place for independent cinema. It’s not surprising, however, that a documentary on video games is shown there, Hideo Kojima being surely the most cinephile of video game creators.
A cinephilia which is also expressed by the content of the speakers who make up the commentary, we thus find there Guillermo DelToro et Nicolas Winding Refntwo filmmakers in the cast of Death Stranding, but also the visionary Georges Miller. Filmmakers who will surely not dry up their praise as is often the case with Which ones.
“Someone like Which ones-san, appears as prepared to push the limits. The skills that I can see in great filmmakers, I see them in the work of Which ones-san. The visual language, the syntax, the fascinating imagery: it’s all there, with the aim of delivering an intense experience to the public. The risk is that people may not accept it. It’s too radical in a way. On the other hand, you change the medium in which you work. – Georges Miller
“The little details he pays attention to are what make the difference. If I’m shooting in a house, I spend time on the curtains because that’s the last detail. He will dwell on the wink of the horse’s eye. Hideo Kojima is an unfailing perfectionism. – Nicolas Winding Refn
The documentary made by Glen Milner will recount over an hour and a half the journey of the artist, starting from his childhood until the creation of his own independent company which allowed him to design Death Stranding. The illustrious Hideo Kojima in full production of the long-awaited Death Stranding 2 sequel will still be present at this premiere to answer questions from viewers.
This documentary will also be the occasion perhaps to evoke his recent musical ambitions. The creator of Metal Gear Solid, decidedly very versatile, declared in 2022 that he wanted to try his hand at creating music. The same year, he had also appeared in the company of the musician Woodkid, for whom he also provided the scenography during his last tour.
It’s hard to say for the moment if the documentary will offer a real critical look at its subject or if it will above all be a nice promotional tool that is very useful for highlighting upcoming productions, namely Death Stranding 2 and the horror game Overdose. Let’s add to this that for the moment, no information concerning the distribution of the film outside the festival has been communicated.
