Ukraine attacked the Crimean Bridge twice – on October 8, 2022 and July 17, 2023. The illegally constructed crossing is still operational, but the SBU has repeatedly demonstrated that it is temporary.
Ukrainian special services have revealed exclusive details of how the attacks on the Crimean Bridge took place. In film “Crimean Bridge Encore” Vasily Malyuk and the brigadier general of the military counterintelligence “Hunter” opened the curtain and shared how they carried out the most complex special operations.

The SBU for the first time provided details about the attacks
The intelligence services previously lifted the curtain and told how the first attack on the Crimean Bridge took place October 8, 2022. The head of the SBU Vasily Malyuk clarified that at that time Ukraine used improvised explosive devices and 15 tons of hexogen. By the way, in TNT equivalent it is about 21 tons.
About the second attack on the Crimean Bridge, which took place July 17, 2023, the special services say for the first time. That day, 5 Ukrainian drones were heading to cross the Kerch Strait. However, plans had to change dramatically when the Russians took to the skies the Su-27 fighter. Then the SBU operational headquarters chose a new target – the frigate Admiral Essen.
The drones moved in two groups – two boats in front, like scouts, and three more – behind. The complexity of the operation also lay in the fact that in July the nights are short, so the SBU had time until 03:00 at most. When the Russians picked up the Su-27, the headquarters realized that they were looking for them. Therefore, we had to make a detour of about 70 kilometers to get to the set goal.
When the drones changed route, the SBU received interesting information – there was a frigate “Admiral Essen”Ukraine pursued the goal of hitting this ship, but fate itself pushed the intelligence services to this.
This is a very priority goal for us, and at some point the team began to doubt and think rather than go to Essen. Yes, we licked our lips at Essen. But they walked around it at a distance of 1.5 kilometers. For we had a clear task as the Supreme Commander-in-Chief. In addition, on the ship itself, by that time they already knew about the existence of our sea drones and were awake,
– said Malyuk.
A general with the call sign “Hunter” says that the drones would not have been able to reach the bridge, because, theoretically, they would have run out of fuel. One surface drone carried about 900 kilograms of TNT, so the following decision was made – one group would attack the Crimean bridge, and the other would attack the Russian launch vehicle.
To prevent the powerful drones from simply drowning, they went in search of the Essen. Unfortunately, it was not possible to catch up with the launch vehicle, since it was cruising to the bay in Novorossiysk. Therefore, the SBU decided to blow up three sea drones near the shore of Yalta.
But the first group of two drones was able to reach the target and successfully hit the supports of the Crimean Bridge. One naval drone went to ram a railway bridge support. Although the connection was stable, there were some delays and the drone floated between the supports. Then the operator turned him around and attacked the automobile part of the bridge. By the way, then the special forces worked accurately and hit the support.
Meanwhile, the second drone was heading towards the support of the railway bridge. It was at that moment that a train passed by, but with empty carriages (the SBU came to this conclusion, taking into account that the locomotive was moving from Crimea, which means there was no fuel in the barrels). The second drone also successfully hit a railway bridge support.
By the way, SBU agents were also able to obtain secret reports from the inspection of the bridge supports carried out by the occupiers. According to them, six of the eight “supports” were destroyed and two were damaged.
The SeaBaby drone was created specifically to attack the supports of the Crimean Bridge
Attacking the supports of the Crimean Bridge turned out to be a difficult task, so Ukrainian engineers developed their own marine drone – SeaBaby. “Hunter” said that the crossing was built in the Kerch Strait on a very large layer of silt. To keep the bridge in place, the Russians used 15 – 20, and possibly even 30 piles under each support. These rods, stuck into the mud, resemble the shape of a broom, and thus hold the supports.
It would be very difficult to destroy this support, but my engineers had the brilliant idea that we would try to break these piles and they would burst. Then the support will pull the bridge down even more,
– said “Hunter”.
This task was very difficult to accomplish technically, since Ukraine did not have the necessary weapons in its arsenal. In addition, the SBU assumes that planes or aerial bombs probably would not have been able to reach there. Then the intelligence services realized that it was necessary to build their own naval drone, and not an ordinary one, but a powerful one. After all, the engineers were faced with the task of creating a weapon capable of delivering 800 kilograms of TNT and cover a distance of at least 800 kilometers at sea with waves up to four points.
The speed of the sea drone was also an important indicator. Especially at the final stage. As Hunter explained, the drone was supposed to finally break away from the pursuing ships and maneuver in the event of a helicopter attack. In addition, it was important that the connection with the drone did not disappear.

Thanks to joint efforts, Ukraine was able to create the SeaBaby maritime drone, which reminded the occupiers that the Crimean Bridge is not a permanent structure.
