Remember that moment in the opening cinematic of Helldivers 2 where everything seems to be going well, and then the guy starts screaming because the Terminide is killing his family right in front of him? Thanks to a new behind-the-scenes video from the company behind the scene, you can enjoy a close-up look at the scene’s mo-cap.
This video was not produced by Arrowhead itself, but by Goodbye Kansas Studios, a Swedish visual effects studio. It’s not overly long, but it offers some interesting looks at the motion capture and modeling that was used to bring the intro to life in a way that isn’t just people in funny costumes running around with fake guns.
The best moment occurs around the 50 second mark. Here actor Craig Lee Thomas realizes that the family of his character is about to break the beetle, and then begins to panic and screams the very cult “no, sweet freedom, nooooooo.”
The video includes a view from two cameras. The first is an ultra-close-up of Thomas’s face from the camera attached to his mo-cap hat, which allows you to see all the movements of his face as he emotes. The second is a wider shot of just a couple of other people from the studio just sitting cross-legged behind him with completely straight-faced expressions.
For studio employees, such scenes are commonplace, so their stony faces are understandable. Just think, an ordinary Tuesday. They don’t write that down either.
In addition, there is footage showing how the Helldiver battle scenes were created.
