Yesterday the Eisbären Regensburg met the Wolves of EHC Freiburg at home in the Donau-Arena. The teams fought a dramatic duel that Regensburg won in the final third. The victory brought the Eisbären important points and the team moved up to fourth place.
In a real heart-stopping finale, second division ice hockey team Eisbären Regensburg won their home game against the Wolves of EHC Freiburg: After falling behind in the final third, the Domstadt team turned the game around with two goals in the last seven minutes to an ultimately deserved 4:3 (1:1/ 1:1/2:1) home win. Corey Trivino had previously given the Eisbären the lead twice in front of 2,388 spectators in the Donau-Arena (7th and 23rd minute). After the respective equalizers and the 3:2 for the guests in the final period, Andrew Schembri (54th) and Andrew Yogan (58th) secured the points for the EBR with their goals. Since all other teams in the league had no games, the Eisbären jumped to fourth place in the table (16 points) thanks to their success. Freiburg remained tenth (13). The next tough task lies ahead for the Upper Palatinate team with the away game at the Krefeld Pinguinen on Friday, October 13th (7:30 p.m.). Coach Max Kaltenhauser’s protégés will play their next home game on the following Sunday, October 15th, from 5 p.m. in the Donau-Arena against the strong ESV Kaufbeuren (preliminary report to follow).
Follow-up report:
In addition to the injured defenders André Bühler and Korbinian Schütz, striker Kevin Slezak also had to miss the game against the EHC Freiburg wolves with an injury from the Rosenheim game. In addition, Patrick Demetz (defense), Niklas Zeilbeck and Petr Pohl (both attack) were not in the squad. Tom McCollum started in goal, Jonas Neffin was his backup.
Exciting first game
The game started promisingly for the cathedral townspeople: After a number of good chances, it was Corey Trivino who made it 1-0 for the hosts in the seventh minute after great preparatory work by Andrew Yogan. But the joy only lasted 32 seconds – Nikolas Linsenmaier suddenly appeared alone in front of goalie Tom McCollum and coldly converted to quickly equalize Freiburg’s score at 1-1 (7th minute). Despite some good chances on both sides – including a long double majority for Regensburg – there were no further goals in the first half.
Unlucky equalizer
After the break, the Danube city team completely took control of the game. Guest keeper Luis Benzing defused a number of great chances. In
In the 23rd minute, however, he had to reach behind himself: After an excellent combination via Abbott Girduckis and Yogan, Trivino was completely free at the right post and scored with a direct pass to give the EBR a new lead – 2-1. Despite the overwhelming superiority at times, the Eisbären had to swallow the equalizer again – and it was extremely unfortunate: an actually harmless cross from Viktor Buchner hit an EBR defender in the calf and was deflected into the goal (34th).
Polar bears fight their way to victory
The final section ended with a 2-2 draw, which the Breisgauer team initially dominated. After a strong solo effort, guest top scorer Parker Bowles gave Freiburg the Wolves’ first lead, making it 3-2 (52′). The goal should mark the beginning of a hot final phase – because the polar bears showed fighting spirit. First, Andrew Schembri deflected a shot from Sandro Mayr into the net to make it 3-3 (54th), providing a quick response just two minutes after the setback. Then Yogan completed a clean counterattack with the celebrated 4:3 for the Upper Palatinate – game turned again after 58 minutes. Freiburg took Benzing off the ice for a sixth skater and called a timeout, but the Eisbären maintained their narrow lead over time.
Important points for the polar bears
Thanks to the victory, the Eisbären jumped up to fourth place in the table (16 points). Since the remaining teams in the league had no games, Freiburg remained tenth (12) despite the defeat.
Next games
Now the EBR has a difficult away game ahead of them: On Friday, October 13th, the long journey to the Krefeld Pinguinen is scheduled (starts at 7:30 p.m.). The next home game will follow two days later, on Sunday, October 15th: The strong ESV Kaufbeuren will be playing in the Donau-Arena from 5 p.m.
