No wonder that there were then rumors about a film adaptation of another popular Nintendo brand: The Legend of Zelda.
The next big Nintendo film adaptation: The Legend of Zelda is coming to the cinema as a fantasy blockbuster
A few months ago it was just a rumor. How Variety reports, the project is now actually taking shape. Sony is the major studio behind the Legend of Zelda film adaptation, which is set to hit the big screen in the guise of a live-action blockbuster. Sci-fi expert Wes Ball was hired as director.
Ball is familiar with well-known franchises. He directed all three Maze Runner films and most recently directed Planet of the Apes: New Kingdom, which will be released in 2024. For Zelda, he will be working with a script written by Derek Connolly, who wrote the Jurassic World trilogy.
What is The Legend of Zelda about? The series has a history of almost 40 years
The Legend of Zelda is one of Nintendo’s most successful franchises. The first part of the video game was released in 1984. Since then there have been numerous sequels, spin-offs and crossovers with other brands. Most recently, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was released for the Switch. The story takes you to the fantasy world of Hyrule.
The focus is on the elf-like warrior Link and the eponymous Princess Zelda. Together they fight against the villain Ganon, whose warmongering brings nothing but mischief and ruin. It is not yet clear who will play the iconic characters. But many fans of the series already have a favorite.

Since there have been rumors about a film adaptation of the video game series, one name in particular has appeared on Twitter in connection with Zelda casting: Hunter Schafer. The actress, known from Euphoria, can be seen next week in The Hunger Games – The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and would be a perfect choice for Zelda.

Some time ago Schafer was even asked directly whether she could imagine taking on the role of Zelda. Their reaction at the time was visibly enthusiastic. “That would be cool! An elf? Yeah! I played that game a lot when I was a kid. It was such a good game,” she said during a red carpet interview.

Fantasy epic: When does The Legend of Zelda start in cinemas?
Sony has not yet announced a specific theatrical release for The Legend of Zelda. The project is still in its early stages. First the script has to be written. As long as the actors’ strike in Hollywood continues, no casting decisions can be made. And only then can filming begin. The Legend of Zelda still has a long way to go.
