The next nun film after “The Nun II” awaits you in cinemas today. In addition, we would like to recommend several restarts to you. Fans of sci-fi bombast and nasty horror should definitely plan a visit to the cinema.
It’s certainly not the rule that in one week, on the same day, several films are released in German cinemas that have made a lasting impression on us at FILMSTARTS. And yet that is exactly the case today, September 28, 2023.
While the youngsters are most likely to have fun with “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” and the next nuns can already be seen on the screen with “The Nun’s Race” a week after the horror hit “The Nun II”, we three new starts of the week were particularly impressive:
“The Creator”: Monumentales Science-Fiction-Epos
“Godzilla” director Gareth Edwards returns with “The Creator,” a whopping seven years after his last directorial effort, the “Star Wars” spin-off “Rogue One.” And how!
But anyone who thinks that Edwards’ $80 million hit will be smaller than the blockbuster competition, which likes to devour production costs in excess of $250 million, is seriously mistaken. In a sense, Edwards is returning to his roots with his latest prank: After having already created something of a modern sci-fi classic with “Monsters,” which only cost $500,000, he is now showing how much can be made from $80 million dollars is to be extracted.
The futuristic blockbuster about the war between humans (including John David Washington) and a powerful artificial intelligence really blew FILMSTARTS editor-in-chief Christoph Petersen’s socks off. In the FILMSTARTS review, the “especially visually visionary sci-fi epic,” which was immediately named “sci-fi event of the year,” received an outstanding 4.5 out of 5 possible stars. Only minimal narrative weaknesses result in a B grade being deducted.
“Speak No Evil”: Horror that shocks and disturbs
Christian Tafdrup announced that he wanted to make the “most disturbing film in Danish cinema history” together with his brother Mads Tafdrup. And while everyone has to decide for themselves whether the enfant terrible duo can actually hold a candle to Lars von Trier (“Dogvill”, “Antichrist”), we think that in the end “Speak No Evil” is not just about its ominous mood and the tension that comes with it, but above all “shocked and disturbed” with painful, naturalistic outbursts of violence – and thus burns himself into the memory of his audience. The FILMSTARTS review gives it 3.5 stars and a recommendation for everyone who can tolerate it.
That’s what it’s about: Bjørn (Morten Burian) and Louise (Sidsel Siem Koch) befriend a Dutch family during their vacation in Tuscany, with whom they stay in touch later. So when one day an invitation to Holland comes to their house, the two of them accept without hesitation. And at first everything seems to be fine on site, until it eventually leads to more and more small misunderstandings – which soon lead to major problems…
“Wochenendrebellen”: Really strong cinema from Germany
Last but not least, we would also like to recommend “Weekend Rebels” to you. The film by “This Stupid Heart” maker Marc Rothemund is our September contribution to the FILMSTARTS initiative “German cinema is (yet) awesome!” – which we recommend to all those who have a soft spot for cinema with a lot of heart and just as much humor have. (4 stars)
At the center of the father-son adventure are Mirco (Florian David Fitz) and his autistic offspring Jason (Cecilio Andresen), who make a pact: Mirco and his son attend home games of all the football teams in the first, second and third leagues so that they can finally get together can choose a favorite club – if in return Jason puts in a lot of effort to get through school.
