VVV-Venlo drew against FC Emmen in a compelling match on Friday evening. On a visit to the relegated team, the team from Limburg fought back from behind thanks to two goals from Soulyman Allouch, but VVV then forgot to decide the match and eventually had to settle for one point: 2-2.
Trainer Rick Kruys made one change in his line-up compared to the first match against MVV, which was lost 1-3. Martijn Berden made his comeback in the starting line-up after an injury, as a result of which Moreno Rutten dropped a line and started the game as right back in favor of Robin Lathouwers. VVV was the first team to become dangerous through Elias Sierra and Joep Kluskens, but their shots from a distance yielded nothing. Emmen also had some chances in the first ten minutes. VVV goalkeeper Jan de Boer had to play seriously once and prevented Emmen’s opening goal with an excellent reflex. However, it didn’t take long for the home team to take the lead. In the thirteenth minute, coach Fred Grim’s team came through the Venlo defense via the right side, after which Patrick Brouwer pushed the ball past Jan de Boer from close range and Emmen took the lead.
VVV turns it around completely
Emmen tried to push through after the opening goal, but VVV played well under that pressure and that led to a lightning-fast equalizer. Allouch passed the ball from the left side to Roel Janssen who had crept forward and without the central defender touching the ball, the ball fell in in the far corner: 1-1. That goal in the nineteenth did VVV good and the visitors pressed more and more with a number of well-running attacks. After more than half an hour of play, this resulted in a Venlo lead. From another smooth attack, the ball ended up on the left flank at Allouch, who came in with a nice action and then curled the ball even more beautifully into the far top corner. For example, the winger personally gave the Limburgers the lead with a wonderful goal. It could have been even more beautiful for VVV before rest. Simon Janssen pushed the ball from the left side of the box against the post after yet another successful attack from Venlo.
The ball won’t go in
So only a 1-2 lead for VVV after the first half, in which the visitors took control of the game after the equalizer. Emmen therefore had to tap into a different barrel after the break, but in the first ten minutes it was again VVV that came closest to a goal. After a perfect counter, Martijn Berden seemed to have the ball in front, but the attacker encountered Jan Hoekstra. Emmen’s goalkeeper could breathe a sigh of relief a minute later when a good shot from Michalis Kosidis flew just over his goal. With half an hour to go, VVV continued to string together the dangerous moments. Berden once again encountered goalkeeper Hoekstra and an Emmen defender had to prevent Kosidis from doubling the margin with an utmost effort. Smans and Allouch also had huge shooting opportunities, but could not make it 1-3.
Hard-fought point
While VVV created chance after chance, Emmen only needed one chance on the other side of the field to score. Piotr Parzyszek got the ball in front of his feet in the penalty area and put the home team level: 2-2. Kruys intervened immediately and brought in two fresh forces with Mohammed Odriss and debutant Mohamed Hegi as replacements for Sierra and Berden. Even with those two fresh youth players in the team, however, VVV had to limit itself to defending in the last twenty minutes. Partly thanks to a number of good saves by goalkeeper De Boer, the team from Venlo managed to pull the tie over the line and so the first point of the season went to Venlo.
