The passion of more than a thousand members of the Pilares Monumental Orchestra was on display yesterday morning at the Altar a la Patria, with the concert that closed the Chapultepec Nature and Culture Festival 2024.
For one hour, a dozen pieces were performed, including classical music full of meaning, current rock, bolero and songs that have become part of the popular taste of our country. All of them were performed joyfully by the capital group, formed as an initiative for community cultural and artistic access.
From early on, the group’s musicians were tuning up and concentrating on fragments of the pieces they performed starting at 9:30 a.m. The cool, cloudy weather did not diminish the enthusiasm of the participants in the hundreds of workshops that are held at the more than 300 Pilares locations in Mexico City.
It was announced that the orchestra, which has already given concerts at the Monument to the Revolution and the Zócalo in the capital, has another concert scheduled for October 1, the day of the presidential inauguration.
In addition to family members, friends of the group’s participants and those interested who came specifically for the concert, strollers and sports practitioners in Chapultepec were attracted by what they heard at the time of the final adjustments. A couple of runners stopped. Oh, how cool!

Javier Hidalgo Ponce, general coordinator of the Pilares Community Education Subsystem, said that the orchestra is a A dream that began with the Pilares project, to bring music, culture and education to communities so that everyone has access to it for free. The initiative started with 50 users, and now has 1,400 musicians.

Participants of all ages
The crowd of young and adult performers, seated, flanked the hundreds of choir members. In front, the violins; the guitars, to the left, and percussion to the right. Everyone was proud to attend the historic space, which is now a place of enjoyment for its inhabitants.
The audience could see the musicians, behind them, the Monument to the Child Heroes, and beyond that, the tower, the castle of Chapultepec Castle and a sky full of clouds jutting out from the trees as a majestic backdrop.
The compositions were discussed in their historical context, many of them marked by currents that transformed the culture or society of that time. Some, like the Hymn to joy, They continue to stir the social imagination with their verses of brotherhood and hope that accompany Beethoven’s powerful composition.
The presentation was formed, in that order, by Palladio, by Karl Jenkins; Canon in D Major, by Pachelbel; Piano Man (Spanish version), by Billy Joel; Hymn to joy; The rosebush has thorns, of the Cañaveral Group; Two gardenias, by Isolina Carrillo; The bamba; Habanera, Bizet’s; the fusion of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony with the Things no. 5, by Damaso Perez Prado, and Live life, de Coldplay.
The musical program was a journey through evocative and reflective pieces; it also covered trust in human nature and the variety of everyday experiences in love and art, up to the joyful cultural and rhythmic mix, which became a pleasant dance experience, to conclude with a powerful invitation to live life.
There were people who kept the rhythm with their bodies, young people who kissed and practiced some tropical steps, the father who danced with his daughter on his shoulders or the mother who applauded in front of her son who jumped little by little to the rhythm of the music.
The cold Sunday morning allowed for an extraordinary and celebratory atmosphere for musicians and singers who came to Chapultepec to exercise their expertise and enjoy the recognition born from their access to art.
