Liverpool failed to win in the sixth week of the Premier League. Come to the headquarters of the promotion team Brentford, the Reds were held to a 3-3 draw.
Playing at the Brentford Community Stadium, Saturday (25/9/2021), both teams scored goals against each other, making the match end without a winner. Liverpool managed to score through Diogo Jota (31′), Mohamed Salah (54′), and Curtis Jones (67′).
But Brentford was able to reply with goals from Ethan Pinnock (27′), Vitaly Janelt (63′), and Yoane Wissa (82′). Even so, this result still leads Liverpool to the top of the Premier League standings with 14 points and is unbeaten.
Meanwhile, the addition of one point makes Brentford ninth position with 9 points.
The course of the match
Liverpool almost took the lead in the 7th minute. Mohamed Salah was unmarked after receiving Diogo Jota’s breakthrough pass.
The Egypt forward managed to fire a shot past goalkeeper David Raya, but just as the ball was just over the line, Kristoffer Vassbakk Ajer slid to clear the ball from the net.
The 11th minute, the same thing happened again, but in front of Liverpool’s goal. Bryan Mbeumo’s flick had failed to keep out goalkeeper Alisson Becker, but before the ball went into the net, Joel Matip arrived and threw the ball away.
Liverpool just got another chance in the 24th minute. Through a corner kick, Virgil van Dijk managed to head the ball, but the direction was not right on target. The 27th minute, actually Brentford who scored a goal.
Crossing Sergi Canos managed to lead to Ivan Toney who immediately made a backheel pass to Ethan Pinnock. The last name then managed to kick the ball into the goal that Alisson was out of control.
But the lead only lasted four minutes. In the 31st minute, Jordan Henderson’s crossing was successfully met by Jota in the penalty box with a header that Raya failed to save. The score became a 1-1 draw.
Liverpool almost turned ahead in the 39th minute. Curtis Jones kick from outside the penalty box instead hit the post. Jota managed to control the wild ball in front of the Brentford goal, but his shot was blocked by Raya.
Towards the end of the first half, Liverpool got a chance through a free kick after Frank Onyeka violated Andy Robertson in front of the penalty box. But Trent Alexander-Arnold’s execution bounced over the goal Brentford. The 1-1 score lasted until halftime.
In the second half, Liverpool managed to turn ahead in the 54th minute. Salah, who received a cross from Fabinho, finished it with a close-range shot that Raya failed to save. The referee checked the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) before confirming the goal.
Brentford tried to catch up, and finally paid off in the 63rd minute. Pontus Jansson’s strike in a chaotic situation in front of Liverpool’s goal still hit the post, but Janelt’s wild ball was snatched by Janelt with a header that managed to get into the Liverpool goal. The score is back as strong, 2-2.
Liverpool took the lead five minutes after Brentford’s second. Curtis Jones fired home from distance to beat Raya. His shot hit Ajer before finally nesting in the Brenftord goal.
But it’s not Brentford if you just give up. In the 82nd minute, they again equalized. Receiving Shandon Baptiste’s cross, Yoane Wissa managed to trick Alisson with a lob from the left corner, changing the score to 3-3 which lasted until the end.
