Exciting and Fun Astronomy Competitions at the National Science Olympiad 2023

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – At the National Science Olympiad (OSN) This year, astronomy become one of the fields of competition that has its own charm for high school / MA level students. Labiba Tuhfatus Safira, a student at SMA Negeri 1 Malang, East Java, thinks that the field of astronomy is very exciting and fun.

“Astronomy is exciting and fun. We can know the details of the sky and the moon. Especially, the most memorable when I took part in the observation round using telescope in the evening. I was observing the moon with other friends,” Labiba said after taking the observation round test in the OSN field of Astronomy at Bogor 7 Public High School, West Java, on Wednesday evening, August 30, 2023.

Labiba said that he and the other OSN participating students were very excited to take part in the SMA/MA level OSN which was held offline. “I can meet friends from all over Indonesia who like astronomy. Moreover, they can exchange opinions about astronomy. All my friends here are very excited,” he said, quoted from the website of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbudristek).

The same thing was also expressed by another OSN participant, Gregorian Eka Putra Wara from SMAS Santo Yoseph Denpasar, Bali. According to him, astronomy became his way of loving science.

“Since childhood, I fell in love with astronomy because it is both exciting and fun. At that time, when I was 10 years old, I learned about this phenomenon black hole. I am happy to gain valuable experience in OSN. The moment of the observation round was my first experience using a telescope,” said Gregorian.

The 2023 OSN jury in the Astronomy competition, Hakim L. Malasan, said that the OSN in the astronomy field was a competition that students really missed after three years of OSN being held offline. “Students’ interest in astronomy is increasing from year to year. The observation round is the hallmark of OSN in the field of astronomy and is what students are most looking forward to,” he said.

Labiba and Gregorian are two students among the hundreds of OSN participants at the SMA/MA level in 2023 which are being held by the Indonesian Talent Development Center (BPTI), National Achievement Center (Puspresnas), Ministry of Education and Culture in Bogor, West Java, from 28 August to 2 September 2023. The SMA/MA level OSN competed in nine fields, namely Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Informatics/Computer, Biology, Astronomy, Economics, Earth, and Geography.

Observing the Conjunction of Saturn and Super Blue Moon

In addition to the implementation of the OSN, at the same place and on the same day a General Night of OSN in the field of astronomy was specially held to attract the interest of the general public of the city of Bogor and OSN participants in other fields regarding astronomy.

The event presented observations with telescopes, astronomy films, bazaars, and questions and answers about astronomy. The visitors are most interested in trying observations with telescopes.

OSN participants in the fields of mathematics, earth science, physics, and others were curious to try observing with a telescope. Moreover, because on that night the phenomenon of the planet Saturn met the Super Blue Moon.

“Today there is an interesting phenomenon, namely the conjunction of the planet Saturn and the moon. We see that the moon next to it is the planet Saturn. So visitors who come are directed to see that, and it becomes a pleasant impression for the hundreds of OSN participants in other fields who are attending tonight,” said Hakim.
