Facts about NeoCov which is suspected to be a new variant of the corona virus

GridHype.ID – Pandemic due to corona virus (Covid-19) is not over, now a new virus appears called NeoCov.

Chinese scientists claim the NeoCov virus is a ‘new Covid variant’.

Not only that, the NeoCov virus is also called more deadly.

Launching Kompas.com from The Independent, Saturday (29/1/2022), NeoCov Coronavirus is said to have threatened with a higher infection and death rate.

When compared with the previous type of virus that caused a global pandemic, namely SARS-CoV-2 which causes Covid-19.

So, what is NeoCov?

Chinese scientists discover the NeoCov virus, according to a new, yet-to-be-peer-reviewed study report.

However, the NeoCov virus is actually not a new variant of the corona virus that is causing the current global pandemic.

In contrast, NeoCov is a virus that originates from a different type of coronavirus associated with Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS-CoV).

So far, the origins of Mers-CoV itself are not fully understood. MERS-CoV, so far known as the corona virus, is transmitted to humans from infected (Arabic) dromedary camels.

NeoCov is a close relative of the virus that causes the Middle Eastern respiratory tract infection, MERS-CoV and circulates among bats.

The virus is zoonotic, meaning that the corona virus is transmitted between animals and humans, and can be transmitted through direct or indirect contact with animals.

In research published this week, Wuhan scientists warned that NeoCov, or Neo Covid, could cause problems if passed from bats to humans.

The coronavirus does not appear to be neutralized by human antibodies trained to target SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, nor MERS-CoV.

The study of Chinese scientists who identified this virus as Neo Covid shows that there is a potential threat of NeoCov coronavirus infecting humans.

But so far there is no evidence of any indication of how contagious or fatal the virus is.

Laboratory tests have also shown that the ability of the NeoCoV virus to infect human cells is poor.

“We need to see more data confirming infection in humans and the associated severity before becoming anxious,” Professor Lawrence Young, a virologist at the University of Warwick, told The Independent.

This pre-print study, he said, showed that infection of human cells with the Neo-Covid virus was very inefficient.

He added that what this highlighted, however, needed to remain vigilant regarding the spread of coronavirus infections from animals, especially bats, to humans.

“This (the study of the NeoCov virus findings) is an important lesson we need to learn that requires better integration of infectious disease research in humans and animals,” explained Prof Young.

The researchers revealed that the NeoCov virus, which is called a new variant of Covid, is actually still related to Mers-CoV.

“Mers-CoV has been identified in camels in several countries in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia,” said the World Health Organization (WHO).

WHO says that in total, 27 countries have reported cases of Mers-CoV since 2012, and it has reportedly caused 858 known deaths due to infection and related complications.

The WHO further explained that according to an analysis of the genomes of different viruses, it is believed that the transmitted virus probably originated in bats and was then transmitted to camels at some point in the past.

The WHO says 35 percent of patients infected with Mers-Covid die, although this may be too high because mild cases may be missed by existing surveillance systems.
