This is the result of calculations by the Ifo Institute on so-called excess mortality. The age group of people over 80 was particularly affected. Here there were around 116 thousand more deaths than in comparable years. The deputy head of the Ifo branch in Dresden, Rangnitz, said it was surprising that excess mortality accelerated again in 2022. The exact reasons for this are still unclear. In addition to the corona pandemic, the heat wave in summer and the flu epidemic at the end of the year are likely to have played a role.
