Exceptions for sports and cultural events: These new corona rules apply in Berlin from December 28th – Berlin

The Berlin Senate is sticking to exceptions for major sports and cultural events. This was announced by Berlin’s new governing mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) on Thursday after a meeting of the Senate. Franziska Giffey said in a statement that one wanted to react “moderately, proportionately and effectively” to the pandemic situation.

Otherwise, the Berlin Corona Ordinance was adapted to the resolutions of the Prime Minister’s Conference on Tuesday. The new rules should apply from December 28th.

Actually, the Prime Minister’s Conference on Tuesday also decided to ban spectators at “major national events”. Berlin wants to keep its exception rules. They only apply to events with a hygiene concept and technical ventilation. There should be 2G-plus – in the future that means: recovered or vaccinated plus FFP2 mask and negative test.

The maximum number of visitors has also been reduced to 2000 indoors and up to 3000 outdoors. The Friedrichstadtpalast, which hosts variety shows, will benefit from the exception rules in the coming days and possibly weeks. In addition, the Bundesliga clubs Alba Berlin and Berliner Eisbären, who want to play games in front of more than a thousand spectators in Berlin.

Private meetings with a maximum of ten people

The contact restrictions in Berlin have been tightened. The maximum number of people for private events and get-togethers will be reduced to ten, for those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered – indoors and outdoors. For many, the planned New Year’s Eve celebrations have now come to an end. The rules for the unvaccinated remain the same. You are only allowed to meet one other household.

For New Year’s Eve, like last year, a gathering ban will be imposed in 53 locations in the city, as well as a ban on setting off fireworks. These include the old town of Spandau, the Brandenburg Gate, the area at the Frankfurter Tor and a zone at the Gesundbrunnen. In three other areas at Alexanderplatz, at Steinmetzkiez in Schöneberg and around the Moabit correctional facility, the setting off of fireworks is also prohibited.

Progress in vaccination

Public events with more than 200 people indoors and 1,000 outdoors remain prohibited – apart from the exceptions mentioned. “Dance pleasures” in clubs or other rooms are prohibited. The new rules apply until January 28th.

Franziska Giffey announced progress in vaccination. In the meantime, 75 percent of Berliners have at least been vaccinated for the first time. In the past few days in particular, more people have been vaccinated again. 1.7 million Berliners have also already been boosted. This puts Berlin in fourth place in a nationwide comparison of countries.

The governing mayor sees Berlin armed for the impending wave of Omikron. She had consulted with the new Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD): “In Berlin, we are prepared for a failure rate of 30 percent for critical infrastructure staff.” On Thursday afternoon, Giffey also wanted to hold a strategy discussion with Health Senator Ulrike Gote (Greens).
