Book sales have increased 19% in two years. A figure all the more impressive as the trend has been rather downward in recent years. Which books were particularly popular?

During the pandemic, the French stocked up on books. After years of eroding sales, the book market surged in 2021, up 19% from 2019. Over 480 million books were sold this year. “The confinement allowed me to devote more time to reading”, confides a client in a bookstore in Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine). The three best-selling books this year were the latest album byAsterix and Obelix, the 2021 Goncourt Prize and a novel by Guillaume Musso.
This enthusiasm for books reassures the manager of the Le Failler bookstore in Rennes, which has seen its clientele grow: “Many readers have discovered reading, and independent bookstores”, emphasizes Dominique Fredj. A success of the book partly due to comics. The support appeals to young people, but also to adults. Faced with demand, a fifth employee was hired in the “M’enfin?!” bookstore specializing in comics. The start of the year should also be fruitful for the sector, with the release of 550 new references.
