Excavation of Roman Amphitheater in Ammaia: Fifth Campaign Uncovers Unique Building

MERIDA, 23 (EUROPA PRESS)

Technicians from the National Museum of Roman Art in Mérida and professors from the University of Lisbon have been carrying out the fifth excavation campaign in the Roman city of Ammaia, located in the Portuguese town of Marvao, from July 10 to 29.

The project, co-directed by Trinidad Nogales and Nova Barrero, is completing the excavation of the city’s amphitheater, which was discovered by the team in 2019, which represents “a unique building, adapted to the orographic conditions of the terrain, and which completed the public equipment of the Roman city”, according to the Ministry of Culture in a press release.

During this 2023 campaign, it is expected that the excavation of the building’s cavea, the stands in which spectators enjoyed the gladiatorial games, would be completed in part, excavated on the rock, taking advantage of a previous quarry, and partly built using masonry and wooden structures.

The arena of the amphitheatre, the space on which the games took place, also continues to be released.

It should be noted that the ‘Lusitania. research and archaeological project in the Roman city of Ammaia’ participates in the Aid for Archaeological Projects Abroad from the Ministry of Culture and Sports that promotes archaeological activity in other countries.

In this case, the Roman Studies Foundation and the National Museum of Roman Art are committed to studies in the Roman province of Lusitania, of which Augusta Emerita was the capital, to understand how the models of the metropolis were implanted in the province, he explains.
