Legends of Extreme Metal Unite: Iggor Cavalera and Shane Embury Release Dystopian Soundtrack
Two titans of the extreme metal scene, Igor “Iggor” Cavalera (formerly of Sepultura and Cavalera Conspiracy) and Shane Embury (of Napalm Death), have joined forces for a groundbreaking split release. This collaboration, a fusion of brooding dark ambient, industrial noise, and heavy synth-laden electronics, feels like the lost soundtrack to a dystopian fever dream.
The split, released via Cold Spring Records, features two side-long tracks: “Neon Gods” by Cavalera and “Own Your Darkness” by Embury. Each piece is a masterclass in atmospheric soundscapes, pushing the boundaries of their respective genres.
“Neon Gods”: A Sonic Descent into Darkness
Cavalera’s contribution,“Neon Gods”,is a cinematic journey into the abyss.it begins with creeping dark ambience, gradually unfolding into a brutal sonic nightmare. The track oscillates between dread and anguish, punctuated by slow, pulsating drones and meditative waves of static. The crescendo of harsh industrial noise and death industrial vocalizations is nothing short of pummeling.Cavalera describes the track as “a bit of a sonic trip, with different layers of atmospheric vibrations, from darkness to light.” He adds, “It’s an absolute pleasure to do this split release with Shane. I believe we share a lot of similar ideas when it comes to opening our mind to different styles of sounds.”
“own your Darkness”: A Hypnotic Apocalypse
Embury’s “Own Your Darkness” is a menacing exploration of pitch-black dark ambient.Hypnotic bass swells and celestial synth lines create an eerie, enveloping atmosphere. The track ebbs and flows, building tension until the all-encompassing apocalyptic bleakness closes in.
Embury reflects on the creative process: “Iggor and I have been good friends for decades, and this is a record very different for us both but amazing! It was my first experiment with the Solar 42, an excellent synth for those eternal drones of despair, assisted by my long-time colleague Russ Russell.” He continues, “As I journey ever onward through my individuation, it’s imperative that I own my own darkness… hence the title. We all need to strive for balance and to kindle a light in the darkness of being.”
A Legacy of innovation
This collaboration is a testament to the enduring creativity of both artists. Cavalera, who left Sepultura in 2006 due to “artistic differences,” has as explored diverse musical avenues, including the Mixhell project with his wife Laima leyton and the Petbrick project with Wayne Adams. Embury, a cornerstone of Napalm Death, continues to push the boundaries of extreme music with projects like Dark Sky Burial.
