Asunción The former senator and constitutional founder Hugo Estigarribia Gutiérrez yesterday described the unity between Añetete and Honor Colorado as a farce and pointed out that desperation prevails among the Colorado.
He said Cartes used his press and the judiciary to pressure his enemies and advised the corrupt to be excluded from their ranks by the ANR and not bother with the “traitors”.
Estigarribia told ABC yesterday that the mock unity that took place in Coronel Oviedo last Saturday was a farce and a crude opera. He said the act reflected the hypocrisy that exists between Colorado Añetete and Honor Colorado.
“It is not possible to threaten anyone while the accused and convicted are still in the Colorado Party. As long as there is no moral cleansing, no one can be expelled, ”said the former senator. He was referring to statements made by the chairman of the ANR, MP Pedro Alliana, who had threatened to expel “traitors” from the ranks of the Colorado.
Estigarribia said Honor Colorado used “the media” owned by former President Horacio Cartes to make very strong allegations, even on a “personal level”, against members of the ruling party and the left.
He also alleged that the ANR Court of Conduct is silent about the situation of convicted and prosecuted members of the ANR.
He cited the examples of former Cartista Senator Víctor Bogado (convicted), former Cartista Senator Óscar González Wollen (convicted) and former Añetete MP José María Ibáñez. “It was not intended to show that the party is against corrupt people. On the contrary, it is in favor of Cartes, ”said the former MP.
Elsewhere, Estigarribia said the party’s situation was very serious. He recalled that the meetings are being held at the residence of the former Honor Colorado President and Leader. “The chief’s blessing in front of the political group after denouncing everything. It’s a wrong unit. Instead of a positive effect, it has a negative effect. It’s just about gaining an electoral advantage, ”said Estigarribia.
The ex-senator recalled that Cartes welcomed at his residence two people classified as “severely corrupt” by the United States government and denied entry to the United States: the accused candidate for mayoral of Ciudad del Este, Ulises Quintana (ANR), and the convicted ex-Senator Óscar González Hence.
“It all started with Ulises Quintana, who has drug trafficking links. This shows that everything is tolerated. This is a very bad sign in times of economic crisis. The country needs prudence, the politicians have to respect the people, ”said the former senator.
Quintana is accused of being linked to suspected drug trafficker Reinaldo Javier “Cucho” Cabaña.

At another moment, Estigarribia recalled the statements made by Añetete’s vice-president and presidential candidate, Hugo Velázquez, who accused his future rival, the Cartista Santiago Peña, of only taking orders from Cartes. The former senator said the situation in the ANR was so bad that Peña was again running for President as Cartes’ “bank clerk”. “He has a salary and the next day he hugs Velázquez,” he said.
“We see her hugging. The lack of character and dignity of Santiago Peña is the worst that can happen to a political leader, ”he said.
