Ex-Red Sox Outfielder’s Brutal First Year as Manager: A Postmortem

Grady Sizemore: Finding Silver Linings in a Historic Loss

Former Boston Red Sox outfielder Grady Sizemore took on his first managerial challenge with the Chicago White Sox last season, navigating one of the most difficult situations in MLB history. While some might shy away from such a Herculean task, Sizemore embraced the challenge, seeing valuable lessons in the White Sox’s historic struggles.

After Pedro Grifol was dismissed in August, Sizemore stepped into the interim manager position, inheriting a team already destined for a historically bad season. Despite the grim outlook, Sizemore remained positive, focusing on personal and team growth amidst the losing streak.

"It was quite a year," Sizemore told MLB Network radio. "Not really having a lot of expectations going in and then kind of finishing where we did. I learned not only a lot about the team and the organization but you learn about yourself and just how you handle certain situations and how you work together as a unit. But it was a fun experience. It still kind of doesn’t feel real. For the first year, I think it went as good as it could’ve gone, personally.”

UnderSizemore’s leadership, the White Sox finished the season with an 8-31 record, extending their losses to a franchise-record 21 consecutive games. However, a silver lining may emerge from the ashes of defeat. Sizemore’s patience and ability to connect with the players revealed a potential path forward for the struggling franchise.

He clearly enjoyed the experience, stating, “I learned that I like working with players. I like making an impact and I’m just trying to continue down that path of continuing to help guys, give back and be a difference-maker any way I can.”

Sizemore’s determination and player-focused approach make him a strong contender to become Chicago’s permanent manager.

The White Sox face a pivotal offseason. Beyond deciding on their next manager, they must address roster deficiencies. The team has opted to part ways with infielder Yoán Moncada and have been rumored to be entertaining trade offers for pitcher Garrett Crochet. Given the current state of the pitching market, Crochet’s value could be instrumental in rebuilding the White Sox roster.

Chicago’s recent playoff appearances have been fleeting, with early exits in each of the past two trips. Rebuilding for a brighter future will be the primary goal for the White Sox, and Sizemore may be the man to guide them through this crucial phase.
