Now that Princess Mako is no longer a princess, her life has changed a lot. That applies to her hometown, but also to her appearance. Gone are the pearl necklaces and suits!
A new life
It led to a lot of commotion this fall: Princess Mako of Japan had to give up her royal title after she married someone without a title. Mako’s new husband and longtime boyfriend Kei Komuro now works at a law firm in New York, now also the new residence of the former princess. Seems like a big difference compared to the gigantic palace where she first stayed.
In October, the lovebirds tied the knot and Mako and Kei moved to New York. In Japan it is mandatory that a princess “leave the imperial family after marriage to a commoner”. Since Mako found her happiness with Kei, she decided to give up her royal title. She also refused a substantial sum of money from the Japanese government that is traditionally paid to royal women who lose their royal status. So Mako does it completely different, and that can also be seen in her new streetsyle.

Where she used to hide behind her updo and smart suits, she is clearly more casual in her spare time. Nothing more than a gray sweater and dark green dress is enough for Mako against the cold New York wind. With her hair down, it’s a completely different person. We had to blink a few times, but it’s really her! And who would have thought that gray and green would look so good together? New York has gained a royal style icon!
The Japanese royals share sad news.

Also for the normally biggest celebrated royal wedding the couple opted for a modest variant. The public got to see nothing, except for a short press conference in which the two emphasized their love for each other. Mako appeared before the press during her last royal appearance in a pastel blue suit with a pearl necklace. Kei wore a pinstripe suit and printed tie. What a world of difference!
