Kassel – As the 16th of the last European Handball Championship, Switzerland was actually not entitled to a starting place for the World Cup in Egypt. But just like the EM-15. From North Macedonia, the Confederates can now move up with their star Andy Schmid. We spoke to national player Roman Sidorowicz before the Swiss left for Egypt. The former Melsung Bundesliga professional is about to take part in the World Cup for the first time.

When did you find out that Switzerland was allowed to attend the World Cup?

We have an internal team chat group. And on Tuesday evening we talked about the fact that the Czech Republic had withdrawn and how difficult the situation is for the Americans. Ultimately, our captain Luka Maros informed us at 10 p.m. that we were flying to Egypt. Another hour and a half later, the line-up with all participants for the corona tests on Wednesday came.

How much are you looking forward to the World Cup?

The joy is of course huge. It’s just unbelievable what happens in these times. We now hope that all further tests are negative.

What does participating in the World Cup mean for the Swiss team?

Our team has not been to a World Cup for 26 years. It is a great honor to be able to represent our colors at this tournament.

What are you planning to do with the team in Egypt?

We will formulate the goals together with the team. At the moment the whole thing is a bit surreal. We also have to arrive in Egypt first.

How does the preparation look?

Before the turn of the year we had trained together. And last week we had another course, from Tuesday to Saturday. But there is now no time left for training in Switzerland. But we can watch a few video sequences and analyze the opponents, one or the other team meeting is certainly also possible. Otherwise we will play against Austria on Thursday at 6 p.m. with a lot of joy. (Björn Mahr)
