Drew Karpyshyn, the former head writer of Mass Effect, also talked about Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic in the Reddit in an AMA (Ask Me Anything).
Karpyshyn was the lead writer for the first two Mass Effects, and he admitted that no one at BioWare thought that players would uh… like Garrus Vakarian. In Mass Effect 2, both she and Tali can be romantic partners depending on whether you created a male or female Shephard. According to Karpyshyn, the studio always knew that these two characters would return as comrades, but was quite surprised when fans were interested in romantic options.
In the case of Tali, he could somewhat understand this, since we couldn’t see her face (and when she left a picture of herself for Shephard in Mass Effect 3, there was a scandal after they put a stock photo there; this was fixed in the Mass Effect Legendary Edition reissue!) and so it was easy to imagine him somewhat human, although his legs were different. But in the case of Garrus, he was shocked. Seeing that this was what the fans wanted, BioWare went for it. He does not know what the official position of the studio is recently, as he left there for the second time in 2018.
According to him, the possibility of breeding between species is impossible, because in Mass Effect the different species (Tali is a quarian and Garrus is a turian) are biologically too different for a mixed race to be created through sex. The exception is the asari, but that’s understandable because that’s what made them unique. However, this is solely Karpyshyn’s personal opinion. He’s no longer working on the series, so if BioWare wants turian-quarian dolls, that’s their decision.
This, in turn, shows how much the studio was surprised by how much Mass Effect had an impact on the players. This, in turn, puts a huge weight on BioWare, which has changed significantly since then. The new part is being prepared, and there will be similar expectations for them.
