Weiser will not soon forget this Saturday afternoon. Marked by many tough duels and blood on his head, the 28-year-old right-back limped off after 79 minutes, only with the help of two coaches, and received great applause from the Werder fans.

Ex-Hertha professional Mitchell Weiser (28) had to take a beating in the Werder Bremen jersey against Borussia Dortmund.
Weiser clashed twice with BVB defender Nico Schlotterbeck. First the ex-star of 1. FC Union Weiser brutally but unintentionally conceded in a header duel (52). Weiser was first to the ball, Schlotterbeck was too late – and hit Weiser head first and with full force.
Weiser suffered a nasty laceration and was stitched up on the pitch. Minutes passed while the 2017 European Under-21 champions barely moved. And just as the spectators at the Weserstadion were starting to worry, Weiser gritted his teeth and came back onto the field with a white turban covering his blood-smeared wound.

Mitchell Weiser was stitched up on the field in the game against BVB. After that, the ex-professional from Hertha BSC continued to play with a turban.
Remarkable: Weiser didn’t show anything, kept up the pace in Bremen’s game and didn’t avoid an aerial duel. During his time at Hertha BSC, where Weiser made his breakthrough, the Rhinelander was known for a lot – his tough qualities were not one of them.
After a lot of frustration at Bayer Leverkusen, which once paid Hertha BSC twelve million euros for Weiser, Weiser is thriving again in Bremen – and has recently not avoided a duel.

Mitchell Weiser shows resilience in Bremen
Schlotterbeck had, well, undermined him in a header duel, whereupon Weiser stumbled and unhappily twisted his ankle on landing. In contrast to the first duel, Weiser signaled immediately after Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (67th) made it 0-1 that it couldn’t go on.
Werder coach Ole Werner does not yet know how badly it has gotten to Weiser: “The ankle will not be examined more closely until tomorrow. It doesn’t seem to be that bad on the head.”
Weiser experienced Dortmund’s late goal to make it 2-0 (Julian Brandt/85.) in the dressing room – possibly with a headache in the ice bucket…
