Derkach passed away at the age of 82.
“He was a creator! Whether he built a military missile system or created a customs system and until today he remembered everything that he did and created; whether he defended the country as a KGB officer; or, having gone from junior lieutenant to army general, he defended Ukraine from external and internal threats … he has always been a creator,” the people’s deputy wrote.
The funeral service will take place on Sunday, January 16, at the Refectory Church of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. The MP did not specify the cause of his father’s death.
Leonid Derkach was born on July 19, 1939 in Dnepropetrovsk (now the city of Dnipro). In March 1972, he began working in the KGB department of the Ukrainian SSR in the Dnepropetrovsk region.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he moved to the SBU. The career of Leonid Derkach rapidly went up.
In 1992, he headed the State Service for the Technical Protection of Information. From August 1994 to July 1995 he was the first deputy chairman of the SBU. From July 1995 to April 1998 – Chairman of the State Customs Service of Ukraine. In April 1998, he headed the Security Service of Ukraine and worked in this post until February 2001. It was at this time that the murder of Georgy Gongadze took place.
In 2002-2006 he was a People’s Deputy of Ukraine.
