Chauvin, 46, die blank is, pleaded guilty in December 2021 violating the civil rights of Floyd, a 46-year-old black man. Floyd’s death sparked outrage in the US and around the world, sparking Black Lives Matter protests worldwide.

“I really don’t know why you did what you did,” the judge said when issuing the verdict. “But to put your knee on someone else’s neck until they die is wrong. You should be severely punished.”

A video shows Chauvin, who had been a Minneapolis police officer for 19 years, kneeling on Floyd’s neck for nearly ten minutes until he passed out and died.
